    OneDrive Sync Issue

Has anyone who actually upgraded noticed that OneDrive is continuing to sync files? Since upgrading to 10 on Wednesday One drive has been trying to sync this file...

    OneDrive Sync Issue [IMG]

I've no idea what it is or where it came from but it is not in any of my folders, nor is it in my OneDrive folder online, It's only on the Win 10 laptop. Additionally I can not delete it because it says "the file is open in Microsoft OneDrive".

Also, If I stop OneDrive from syncing when I log in, the file disappears, but as soon as I turn on OneDrive, the file re-appears and OneDrive continues to try to sync it...

    OneDrive Sync Issue [IMG]

Anyone else see this or have an idea? BTW all my other files and folders are sync'd and good to go. It's just this orphan file that's making OneDrive continue to sync.

    Thanks.

    :)

Roger that, thanks. Since this sync works over OneDrive, can I ask if you've had any other sync issues with OneDrive?

Posted this on another thread before noticing you had started a new thread for this issue. Here's the quote of that response:

Thanks Kari, I actually thought about contacting you for this issue *Smile

But yeah I know I said folder, because it's in the "OneDrive" folder. At any rate the problem is its been trying to sync since upgrading to Windows 10 on 29 July. In short, OneDrive can't seem to complete "processing the changes", thus the continuing sync. That's the problem.

BTW the issue has also been reported by someone here - Undeletable hidden file .849C9593-D756-4E56-8D6E-42412F2A707B in - Microsoft Community Seems this may be a Win 10 specific issue.

Did you try unselecting "Files not in folders"?

  7. sygnus21 Win User
Yeah I was just about to post...

I tried your suggestion and all that did was remove the other files not in a folder, not the problem file! And, again, the file is only on the local Win 10 machine, not the OneDrive website. I've checked a few times.

    OneDrive Sync Issue

Strange. It was worth a try, though.

What about booting the PC with a Linux Live disk, WinPE disk or something similar and trying to manually remove the problem file?

  9. sygnus21 Win User
I haven't even considered that route. I'm not even sure I know how to do that. However that was a person over at the Microsoft forums I linked to who said he was able to remove it through McAfee, but that it came back so I'm definitely thinking it's something linked to the OS.

BTW I assume you're running Win 10? You don't have it?

Anyway I have to go out for a couple of hours so I'll post back when I get back home.

    Thanks.

OK, so this issue is still here and thus far no one seems to know what's going on or how to solve it.

    Thoughts?

    Thanks.

Honestly, I don't understand why you haven't already tried to boot with WinPE or other live disk and manually remove the file? This example using Macrium WinPE boot disk, download Macrium Free and let it create a boot disk for you. Option to create one is shown automatically when you launch Macrium first time:

    OneDrive Sync Issue [IMG]

    • Switch to C: drive
    • Change the working folder to your OneDrive folder
    • Check that the file has no Read Only (r) and System (s) attributes set. As the file name in your case is quite long, you don't have to type the full name. Use the *.* wildcard to replace any number of characters in file name and any extension, in your case command attrib .849C*.* should be enough
    • If r and / or s attributes are shown for the file, remove them with command attrib .849C*.* -r -s
    • Check that attributes r & s are removed
    • Delete the file with del .849C*.*
(Steps 3 & 5 not necessary; step 3 because removing attributes as in step 4 removes them if set but does no harm if not set, and step 5 because the attrib command works for 100% sure if no error messages are given.)

The file should be removed now. You can test with command dir .849C*.*, it should not be shown anymore.

Well one - I didn't know to do it - now I do thanks to you *Smile

Two - I was too lazy to go through such a task to try to remove it, only to have it possibly come back, or find it's somehow needed by the OS since it only affects 10.

At any rate I'll give your suggestion a try later on and see what gives. I'll keep you posted.

    Thanks.

Just gave your fix a try and it doesn't work - it can't find the file. Says file not found. BTW I tried another file that I knew was on the drive and it found it so I know my search was correct. Anyway here's some info for you.

On my system I have two "OneDrive" folders under my user name; however, if you click properties and hit the Share tab one folder will be named OneDrive, while the other is named SkyDrive... which is the folder I ultimately had to search. Yes, I also searched the "OneDrive" folder as well and it couldn't find anything, not even files I knew (thought) were there (didn't know about the "SkyDrive" folder at first). Anyway I'm guessing there's two OneDrive folders there because when upgraded from 8 to 10, Win 10 kept the old "SkyDrive" (now also named OneDrive) folder, which already had my files.

    OneDrive Sync Issue [IMG]

That said, I had to point to the SkyDrive folder in step #2, which is where my files are located, including the problem file. And browsing Explorer in Macrium actually shows both the OneDrive and the SkyDrive folders.

Anyway I kind of suspected the file (.849C) wouldn't be found if OneDrive wasn't running. If OneDrive isn't running, the file simply disappears. This can be tested by right clicking the OneDrive icon in the notification area, clicking Settings, and unchecking Start OneDrive automatically when I sign in to Windows...

    OneDrive Sync Issue [IMG]

When you uncheck the box, sign out and back into Windows, OneDrive won't be running and the file is nowhere to be found. It only shows up when OneDrive starts. Point? - I suspect this is why Macrium couldn't find it.

    That's it. Now what?

BTW... how do you do a screen shot while in WinPE (Macrium)?

    Thanks.

My Onedrive sync is stuck trying to sync my Documents folder in Onedrive (online). The message when hovering over the cloud in the task bar states: "Downloading 194.0 MB of 195.6 MB 14 files remaining" Onedrive sync has sync'd all the other folders (picture folders) with the exception of the Documents folder. Seems to be stuck here for two days. Any ideas?

    Thanks
