Windows 10: OneDrive: Trouble setting up a new laptop file path to match another device.

Good Morning, A year ago I bought a Windows 10 laptop and synced it to my OneDrive account. I had my existing files in a folder called Documents that is in a section called This PC. OneDrive syncs to that Documents folder. When I create a new file and I click on ‘save as’ or ‘save a copy’, and click on “This PC”, it opens up the Document folder that OneDrive syncs to. This is quick and efficient. I recently bought a Windows 11 laptop that I hope to set up to be exactly the same. I can have one at home and one at work. OneDrive keeps changing my default documents path

I’m sorry to hear that you’re having trouble with OneDrive. It can be frustrating when your settings are changed without your consent. Just a heads up that in regards to this kind of issue, our option is limited and we can only perform basic troubleshooting steps.

Here are some steps you can take to prevent OneDrive from changing your default documents path:

1. Unlink OneDrive and relink OneDrive: You can unlink OneDrive from your device to prevent it from storing your files in the cloud. This will not delete your files or data. Here’s how you can do it:
   
   • Select the OneDrive cloud in your notification area to show the OneDrive pop-up.
     
     
     
   • Go to the Account tab.
     
   • Select the OneDrive Help and Settings icon then select Settings
     
   
   Close OneDrive and follow the steps:
   
   • Press the Windows key + R to open the Run dialog.
     
   • Enter the path %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\settings and select OK.
     
   • Delete the PreSignInSettingsConfig.json file.
     
   • Press the Windows key and type OneDrive.
     
   • Select the OneDrive app and sign in when prompted.

2. To prevent OneDrive from syncing your personal files, you can try the following steps:
   
   • Right-click on the OneDrive icon in the system tray and select "Settings".
     
   • Go to the "Account" tab and click on "Choose folders".
     
   • Uncheck the folders that you do not want to sync to OneDrive, such as Documents, Downloads, and Pictures.
     
   • Click "OK" to save the changes.

Unable to access files stored in onedrive across devices

Please check if the file path on your laptop matches the file path on your PC. If it's different, Windows won't be able to locate the file.

Two paths to OneDrive

I can’t remember how, but a new a Folder has been generated in Explorer with my NAME, this folder contains nearly all of the files/folders showing in the default storage location, ie C:\Users\Jim Smith\, I have therefore now got a set of duplicate files in the system, more confusing is the 2 separate paths to my OneDrive file, eg,

F:>>OneDrive>>Documents>>Spreadsheets>>Flight Sim Spreadsheets>> to the default OneDrive file, and,
James Smith’s OneDrive (Personal)>>Documents>>Spreadsheets>>Flight Sim Spreadsheets, a secondary path.

Clearly this is causing some confusion in saving Excel and Word files, and I wondered if anybody understands how it occurred and what steps I can take in regularizing the situation.
