Windows 10: Onedrive will not backup my desktop

I switched to a new laptop and put Onedrive on it. It backups up everything, but I get a message that says, ""the desktop folder contains other important folders and isn't supported for file backup"". Suggestions so I can back up my desktop?R

Why Does OneDrive Keep Trying To Backup My Desktop And How Do I Stop It?

OneDrive is a cloud-based storage service provided by Microsoft that automatically backs up files and folders to the cloud. It is possible that OneDrive is attempting to back up your desktop files because the "Desktop" folder is included in the list of folders that are being synced by default.

To disable the backup of your Desktop folder, you can follow these steps:

Open OneDrive on your computer and click on the "Settings" icon in the taskbar.

Click on the "Backup" tab.

Under "Folders to back up," click on "Manage backup."

Deselect the checkbox next to "Desktop."

Click "OK" to save your changes.

This should stop OneDrive from attempting to back up your Desktop folder. If you want to disable OneDrive entirely, you can also follow these steps:

Right-click on the OneDrive icon in the taskbar.

Select "Settings."

Click on the "Account" tab.

Click "Unlink this PC."

This will unlink your computer from OneDrive and disable the syncing of your files and folders.

 

Stop Desktop Backup to OneDrive

Go to the Backup tab in the OneDrive settings > Manage backup and stop the backup of the Desktop. It's not possible to uncheck the Desktop folder. Folders that you can uncheck in the OneDrive app are removed from your
computer and remain only in the online OneDrive.

 

OneDrive moved my Desktop into a OneDrive folder and removed Google Drive

To revert the shell folder locations to default, open OneDrive and do the following:

Important: Before proceeding, copy the files in those special folders to another folder or external drive. Please don’t copy them anywhere under Desktop/Documents/Pictures. This is because disabling OneDrive backup for a folder would erase the local copies of the files. Copying them to a different location beforehand will ensure that you don’t need to download them again from the OneDrive cloud.

1. Right-click the OneDrive icon in the Notification area and click Settings.
   
2. Select the Backup tab, and click Manage Backup
   
3. In the Manage folder backup dialog, click on the Stop backup link under the special folder (Desktop, Documents, or Pictures)
   
4. Click Stop backup in the confirmation dialog that appears.
   
5. Repeat the step for each shell folder you want to revert to the original location.
