Windows 10: only 3.3GB of RAM is used from 4.0 GB installed, how to use full

in w10-64bit, (also in w7-32bit, w8-32bit in multiboot) only 3.3 GB of RAM is used from 4.0 GB installed DDR2 RAM.

Is there any tweak to use full 4 GB RAM?

Are you running Windows 10 32bit or 64bit, if you are running Windows 10 32bit, you can only address 4GB RAM

Try this, Windows + R keys to open Run Dialog, type msconfig and click OK

On the Boot Tab click Advanced Options, is Maximum Memory checked, if it is, uncheck it click OK and reboot

i have upgraded with media creation tool.

 

32 bit Operating systems can only address 3.5 Gb of ram, its a physical limitation and no way around it except to go 64-bit.

 

Most likely, your integrated GPU uses it, check in BIOS, how much RAM it is set to.
You can also check in GPU-Z, what is your GPU's memory size, if it is around 768MB.

 

Bravo, GPU-Z says no video memory.

I think it has 8MB memory. shall check at next reboot and post. I have builtin graphics card, nothing additional.

Still be it 8 or 16 or 32, it is far less than the missing 650 MB.

Strange, looks like you system would be 32bit. If you are really running 64bit, take a look at this thread.

But my "System" does say 64-bit os on 64-bit processor, so what exactly are you referring to?

All 64 versions of various software installed without a hitch and are running well.

Sorry to say but what you see is what you get. Doesn't matter whether you run 32 bit or 64 bit Windows on that machine as it is a hardware limitation of the chipset. The old Intel 945G chipset only supports up to 4 GB of memory,

and does not support memory re-mapping, which is required to use the full 4 GB.

And I checked and found that my w8, w7 and w10, all three have "maximum memory" unticked there.

As stormy13 has mentioned there is no solution to your problem with that motherboard. A 64 bit OS does permit access to the full 4 GB RAM but only if the motherboard supports it, which yours does not. This is not uncommon with older boards.

32 bit and 64 bit systems face the same issue with accessing the full 4 GB RAM. It is just that a 64 bit OS has a potential solution. A 32 bit OS has a 4 GB physical address space but this must be shared by RAM and memory mapped hardware which must have priority. RAM and this hardware cannot share the same addresses so a portion of RAM (labeled as Hardware Reserved) will be inaccessible. A 64 bit OS supports remapping of the conflicting RAM to higher addresses where it can then be accessed. But this remapping must be done in the BIOS, which the Intel 82945G motherboard cannot do. Many older boards do not support this.

 

Thanks Stormy for refreshing my memory. I'm still using a motherboard with just two years newer chipset but have completely forgotten how drastic changes happened then.
