Windows 10: Only List on Start Menu, Not Icons

I want my Start Menu to show only a list of programs/files/folders, like this:




but when I choose "Pin to Start" I get big, obnoxious icons which cause the Start Menu to expand much too far over the desktop, like this:




How can I cause additions to the Start Menu to be only the list with the tiny thumbnail icon on the left, as in the first image above, never the big icons that make the Start Menu too big?

• Right click the Settings (Gear) icon on your Start Menu (Alphabetical List), select 'Pin to Start'
• Drag the new Start Menu icon from your Start Menu onto your Desktop
• Right click the new Start Menu icon on your Start Menu and select 'Unpin from Start'

 

My start menu icons aren't showing up properly!

I have same problem, the start menu is not working. when you click it , nothing happened. Microsoft edge and store icon are missing on the taskbar.

You must be on an older Build, the later Builds are showing more the way you want:

 

Well, I just installed Win10 a couple of weeks ago, and this is what came with it. How do I upgrade to a later build?

Note that this is not meant to be used on your primary PC though many people do. I have the latest 14352.1002 build on a Oracle VM and my Toshiba Laptop. Still using TH2 10586.318 on my primary PC.

The next major update is coming out around July 28/29 from what I've read. You may want to wait until then to do this.

You can look at and play with it in a Virtual Machine (VM) under Oracle or VMWare running on your primary computer.

 

A free program called "Classic Shell" will let you have your start menu as you want it.
