Windows 10: Only sound, no picture when playing some of the mp4 files in Movies and TV App And Windows...

There are a few mp4 files not all of them some how that I captured with my HTC smart phone only have sound but no pictures when running with Windows "Movies & TV" app, same for Windows Media Player. Those files plays no problem with QuickTime, VLC player and even my WinAmp. I uploaded the files to Amazon Photos and it also plays there fine. The only software that doesn't play it seems to be Windows Movies & TV app. I needed it to work and not just using QuickTime because some of my DAM software uses Windows player to play those files and cannot set it using other software.

What I did so far:

1 did the SFC /scannow and found no problem

2 It happened for a while now and I had been updating my Windows

3 I also make sure that my video card drivers up to date.

4 I uninstall and reinstall the "Movies & TV" app but still the same

5 I clean the temp folder, but also doesn't work

6 I went to "reset" Movies & TV app but also doesn't work

7 I change the suffix to like avi or something else but still the same, sound only


I used some of the converters and convert files back to mp4 and it does work but I got a file that has a lot smaller size. I don't know what data I lost during conversion so if I can avoid it, it will be the best. I used the VLC player to do conversion, if you have suggestion how to do conversion without loosing data, please tell me. That will be the last resort doing conversion since I have quit a bit files need to convert. I prefer fixing Windows once and for all to read those files.

Movies and TV app - MP4 file problem

Hello all,
Running Ver 1607;
As a result of a seperate issue, I recently changed to 'Movies & TV' app as my default in lieu of Windows Media Player.

When I play MP4 movies on my PC, the video is jerky and the audio is out of synch? Basically they are not watchable. AVI files play ok.

If I play any MP4 from my media player (windows share), it plays normally.

If I play any MP4 using WMP it plays normally.

I have run Defender and Malwarebytes (free) just to be sure and they both come up clear of any nasties.

Have I somehow got a corrupt MP4 codec in 'Movies & TV'? Is this possible?

How would I rectify this? Prefer to stay with 'Movies & TV'.

Thanks to Ivan & Jimbo45 for some suggestions to use another media player.

Anybody else care to offer a suggestion on why Movies and TV app is not working for MP4?
Should I try to uninstall and then re install?

Thanks, but - "Movies & TV" as it is now called is a Windows built-in App; it has a superior HEVC video codec which plays 4K h265 10-bit video more smoothly than latest VLC, Windows Media Player or Media Player Classic (aka, K-Lite).
Unfortunately, the Movies & TV app gags on many audio formats - which ARE supported by those 3 other Apps. So - if I want sound with my HEVC movies, I have to put up with occasional freezes and dropped frames... OR - I may be forced to choose
smooth playback - without sound! (Ms actually suggests using VLC to convert MKV to MP4, but it took 3+ hours on a reasonably fast laptop, to convert 1 movie & it was
still was silent (in Movies & TV) after converting to MP4 file < Grrr! >

(Btw, the MacOS version of VLC does play all of those 'problematic' 4K HEVC video files smoothly - with sound - and on a 6-year old Mac laptop.)
