Pulling my hair out trying to fix this. Normally, the onscreen keyboard is a free floating window that I can resize as necessary. For some reason, it is now docked to the bottom of the screen, blocking the task bar and start menu. The only way I've found to get rid of it is to ctrl alt delete the process. I've seen messages saying to press the little rectangle-in-rectangle button next to the close button [X], but there is no such button. Any help would be appreciated. I'm not on a tablet and have no touch screen monitors.

    onscreen keyboard

I have a Dell Latitude 7220 tablet using Windows 10. The device is currently in tablet mode and the onscreen keyboard will not deploy. The keyboard icon is visible in the bottom right hand corner, but nothing happens when you click on it. I have gone in the keyboard settings and checked use your device without a physical keyboard--Use on screen keyboard. In addition, the box under ease of access-keyboard-use onscreen keyboard is also checked.

A floating keyboard is available with the win+ctrl+0 keys, but I am wondering why I cannot have the icon or have an auto pop-up when typing is available. Any suggestions would be wonderful.

    Thank you.

    Onscreen Keyboard

I have some clients that have disabilities (as well as my daughter) and use the on screen keyboard.

There are couple issues with the current way this works. First I had a problem getting the dock feature to work as this is on a desktop computer and not a Tablet.
Somehow by switching the monitors over on the video card enabled this feature.

    • In Windows 8.1 when the keyboard is docked the task bar moved to above the keyboard and the rest of the screen is from the taskbar to the top of the monitor with a scroll bar down the side.

      • In Window 10 this in not the case, the keyboard docks to the bottom of the screen with the taskbar below the keyboard.
This is not workable for someone with disabilities as they have to move the keyboard every time to see what is underneath.

    • The onscreen keyboard when docked automatically takes on the full width of the monitor.
This is also a problem and there should be an option to size the keyboard both vertically and horizontally.
To explain, my daughter controls the mouse using switches embedded in her hear rest similar to what a quadriplegic might use.
Since the keyboard takes up the full width on the monitor it can take quite some time to move the mouse pointer from one side of the keyboard to the other especially on large 24inch+ monitors.

Currently my daughter is just using the floating keyboard which she can resize to what she wants and has to keep moving it to display what is being covered by the keyboard.
Her problems are minimized by having two monitors, but that also creates a problem of having to slowly move the keyboard from one monitor to the other.

She is currently asking to have Windows 8.1 reinstalled as the keyboard worked better in that version than in Windows 10.

Dock function in the On-Screen Keyboard.

    Hello Andre,

Thank you for posting you query on Microsoft Community Forums.

The dock option in on-screen keyboard is by design and it is enabled only when you use a touch enabled computer. The dock option works similar to a window which maximizes and you cannot move the particular window around.

When you click on dock option, it switch the on-screen keyboard from fixed to the bottom of the screen with full screen mode.

I would suggest you to follow the methods given below and check.

    Method 1:

Try to run a System File Checker (SFC) scan to check for any file corruption.
SFC scan will scan for corrupt system files on the computer and repair them.

    • Press Windows key + X, click Command Prompt (Admin).
    • In the Command Prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:

      sfc /scannow
If the issue still exists, try the next method.

    Method 2:

You may check the same issue with the new user account.

Try these steps to create a new user account and check if it fixes the issue. Refer to the steps below to create a new User Account:

    • Go to Settings.
    • Choose Accounts and then select Other User Accounts towards the left.
    • Select Add an Account.
    • Enter a user name and hit Next.
    • Click on Finish.
    • Sign out from the current Account and Log into the new account.
    • Check if issue persists.
Hope this information is helpful. Do let us know if you need any further assistance, we'll be glad to assist you.
