WINDOWS 10 Updated, Open-Shell stopped working, bad desktop reappeared

sethian, I suggest you uninstall then reinstall open-shell. Or uninstall open-shell and install classic-shell which seems to work fine for me.

 

Open Shell - revisited

Open Shell does work on Windows 11. I have it working. Works fine.

 

Classic shell

I have no idea why I was apparently one of the few who had to do this, but I finally got it working by doing everything suggested here.

I had never used Revo Uninstaller and had the idea that these "cleaner' things can maybe do more harm than good, so was reluctant to go in that direction.

That being the case, I:

• Restored the computer to a pre-August update state
• Did a normal uninstall of Open Shell
• Rebooted
• Allowed the August updates to install
• Re-installed Open Shell

This resulted in the same symptoms (menu briefly flashing when clicking start button).

So I hesitantly:

• Restored computer to pre-August update state
• Downloaded and installed Revo Uninstaller
• Used Revo Uninstaller to uninstall Open Shell nervously selecting the most aggressive cleanup options
• Rebooted
• Allowed August updates to install
• Re-installed Open Shell

To my surprise, it worked!

Thanks to those who emphasized the need to uninstall and re-install and those who said to use Revo Uninstaller when uninstalling.
