Windows 10: Open sourced Windows 10 Calculator ported to Web, Android, iOS

Microsoft recently open-sourced Windows 10’s built-in Calculator app and published the source code, build system on Github. Microsoft also stated that it wants to work with the community and develop new features for the Calculator app.

As the Calculator app has been open-sourced, independent developers can prototype new features that could become part of Windows 10 at some point.

Windows 10 Calculator app has now been ported to Web, Android and iOS by the developers of Uno Platform, an open source cross-platform that allows UWP based code to run on non-Windows platforms.

In a blog post, Uno says that Windows Calculator is built entirely using standard C++ 11 and C++/CX. It uses a calculation engine from 1995.

To run Calculator on non-Windows 10 platforms, some parts of the code were needed to be translated to C# and other parts were adjusted to be compliant with clang’s C++ 11 support.

It is apparently not easy to port a full-featured Windows 10 Calculator app to Android and iOS. The developers met with the following challenges:

UWP porting guidance for Android and iOS developers

Today, we are pleased to introduce a new app development concept map for app developers that aligns software development concepts across the iOS, Android, and Windows platforms. App developers new to Windows 10, who are already familiar with Android or iOS, will be able to use this reference to quickly orient themselves on building for the UWP.

Like the 2nd century B.C. Rosetta Stone tablet, which enabled translation between three different ancient languages, this Windows app concept map can be used to translate ideas between Android, iOS, and Windows, making porting much easier between platforms. You can use the concept map side-by-side with other useful resources found in our porting apps to Windows 10 section on MSDN. Reviewing this guide will help you port your apps to Windows and expose them to a larger user base.

The concept mapping guidance is broken out into 15 sections to make navigation between concepts and platforms simple:

User-interface – overview of controls and styling– overview of controls and styling

Navigation and app structure – toolbars, layouts and back buttons

Custom inputs – speech recognition and beyond

Data – databases, REST calls and web sockets

Tooling – comparing IDEs

App lifecycle – suspend and resume events as well as background tasks

Performance – threading, async calls and performance best practices

Monetization – in-app purchases and trials

Adapting to multiple platforms – responsive layout and device capability testing

Notifications – push and scheduled notifications as well as display widgets

Media capture and rendering – video and audio

Sensors – accessing raw and processed sensor data

Location and mapping – maps, geofencing and geocoding

App-to-app communication – talking between different apps

Software design – overview of preferred design patterns by platform

At a glance, you’ll be able to see the difference between platforms and identify which features and functionality are available to each. The guidance is laid out in a convenient table that let you easily locate and learn more about the platform details you are most interested in. Android supports app widgets, for example, but iOS does not. iOS supports badges, on the other hand, while Android does not. Windows supports badges and also has a tile system.

Open Sourcing the Windows Bridge for iOS

Last week, we released Windows 10 as a free upgrade in over 190 markets, taking the first big step toward upgrading 1 billion devices to Windows 10 and the Universal Windows Platform (UWP). Alongside Windows, we also delivered the Windows SDK and accompanying tools that you’ll use to build and submit Universal Windows apps. Windows 10 introduced new APIs and built a platform that does much of the work to make apps more personal through adaptive UX, natural user inputs and cloud-based services. We also introduced a series of “bridging” technologies to enable developers to bring their existing iOS, Android, Web and desktop code and skillsets to the Windows Store, for which I’ll provide an update here.

Today, we’re releasing an early look at the Windows Bridge for iOS (previously known as ‘Project Islandwood’). While the final release will happen later this fall (allowing the bridge to take advantage of new tooling capabilities that will ship with the upcoming Visual Studio 2015 Update), we are making the bridge available to the open-source community now in its current state. Between now and the fall, we’d love more eyes, feedback, and participation on the code, so we’re doing our development “in the open.”

We’re releasing the iOS bridge as an open-source project under the MIT license. Given the ambition of the project, making it easy for iOS developers to build and run apps on Windows, it is important to note that today’s release is clearly a work-in-progress — some of the features demonstrated at Build are not yet ready or still in an early state. Regardless, we’d love for the interested and curious to look at the bridge, and compare what we’re building with your app’s requirements. And, for the really ambitious, we invite you to help us by contributing to the project, as community contributors — with source code, tests, bug reports, or comments. We welcome any and all participation in building this bridge.

Salmaan Ahmed has an in-depth post on the Windows Bridge for iOS discussing the compiler, runtime, IDE integration, and what the bridge is and isn’t. Best of all, the source code for the iOS bridge is live on GitHub right now. The iOS bridge supports both Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 apps built for x86 and x64 processor architectures, and soon we will add compiler optimizations and support for ARM, which adds mobile support.

I have a few updates to report on the other bridges announced at Build as well: the Windows Bridge for web apps, ‘Project Westminster,’ is live and available with the release of Windows 10 and Visual Studio 2015. Kiril Seksenov recently wrote a blog post on the web apps bridge detailing what happens at the Windows level, how the bridge functions, how you can use it to build ‘Hosted Web Apps’ and addressing common questions.

The Windows Bridge for Android, or ‘Project Astoria’, is currently available as a technical preview by invitation only. We have been gradually inviting more developers each week and will continue to expand this preview program. Our goal is to have everyone currently on the early access waitlist in the program by the end of August; and we are aiming to release the Windows Bridge for Android as a public beta in the fall. As we make progress on the Android bridge, we are also contributing to open-source projects used by its community. We submitted changes to help improve ANGLE. For those who haven’t hear of ANGLE, ANGLE provides translation of OpenGL to DirectX. These changes have been accepted by Google and improved ANGLE’s performance and compatibility with DX feature level 9.3.

The Windows Bridge for Classic Windows apps, ‘Project Centennial,’ that will make it possible to package and publish your current .NET and Win32-based Windows applications to the Windows Store, will be ready for public testing next year.

Announcing the Open Sourcing of Windows Calculator for Windows 10

Today, we’re excited to announce that we are open sourcing Windows Calculator on GitHub under the MIT License. This includes the source code, build system, unit tests, and product roadmap. Our goal is to build an even better user experience in partnership with the community. We are encouraging your fresh perspectives and increased participation to help define the future of Calculator.

As developers, if you would like to know how different parts of the Calculator app work, easily integrate Calculator logic or UI into your own applications, or contribute directly to something that ships in Windows, now you can. Calculator will continue to go through all usual testing, compliance, security, quality processes, and Insider flighting, just as we do for our other applications. You can learn more about these details in our documentation on GitHub.

Open Contribution

In addition to reusing and adapting the code in your own apps, anyone can participate in the development of Windows Calculator. Getting involved is simple. The project is “clone-and-go” and development will follow the standard GitHub flow. There are many ways for developers at all stages to contribute:

Reviewing the Calculator code is a great way to learn about the latest Microsoft technologies like the Universal Windows Platform, XAML, and Azure Pipelines. Through this project, developers can learn from Microsoft’s full development lifecycle, as well as reuse the code to build their own experiences. It’s also a great example of Fluent app design. To make this even easier, we will be contributing custom controls and API extensions that we use in Calculator and other apps, to projects like the Windows Community Toolkit and the Windows UI Library.
