Trying to figure this out in Windows 10. I have a file on my system, and windows doesn't yet know what program to open it with. When I right click the file and select "open with", the dialogue is quite different. Now I no longer have the option of selecting a perfectly fine program from my computer and open the file, my only option is to search for a program in Windows Store which turns out to be a dead end. What option is there to associate a program with a file extension in Windows 10, as the on the fly method that always used to work perfectly, isn't there any more?

    :)

What is the file type, you are trying to open, or is it with all files

  6. The file is a .ifo file which is part of DVD file structure. I have at least 2 programs installed on my machine that should be able to open the file, but I am not having much luck. My menus look nothing like yours, though I have seen similar behavior on other file types. This is what I see.

.IFO file stands for Information file containing info about chapters, program chains etc... and .BUF is a backup copy of the IFO and currently not used. Depending on the file type, you'll get a different type of context menu. Mine is the same as yours when I right click on the IFO file. The context menu offers the choice to open with "Power DVD 15". If I select "Power DVD", it will play the Movie with it but will not associate this file type with "Power DVD 15" unless I select "Open With" then select "Power DVD 15" and put a check mark to always open with "Power DVD 15" then you can see the .IFO file is having the same icon as Power DVD 15.

In your case, Windows could not find any program that it can associate with, so you need to scroll down and select "Look for another app on this PC". A windows will open then you'd navigate to where the executable program that can open it. Usually under "Program Files" or "Program Files (X86)".

win10 doesn't come a default dvd player, for me I downloaded the free VLC media player.

to check if you have any program, with the dvd in the drive ,open file Explorer then this pc ,then right click on the DVD drive and you should get choices ,mine has choice to "open auto play" , and there I get a choice of VLV media player ,and no others ,so if you don't have a choice other than fine new app to open ,ect ect ,then you need to download an app ,and my choice is VLC. if you wish download it here .Official download of VLC media player, the best Open Source player - VideoLAN good luck
