Windows 10: Open with ... won't allow hh.exe for chm files

I have just noticed that CHM files are no longer opening on my Win11 PC. If I select the CHM file and choose Open with from the right-click menu there is no "Microsoft HTML Help Executable" listed as there is on my other Win11 PC. Going to Choose another app on your PC and selecting c:\windows\hh.exe which is the Html Help app results in a message The programme you have selected cannot be associated with this file type. Please choose another programme. Running hh.exe directly from a CMD window hh.exe "C:\Some path\some file.chm" opens the chm as expected.

Chm files should open in Windows 10 without any issue

Right click a chm file and choose Open with

Does Microsoft Help HTML Executable appear in the list?

If not, scroll down and click 'More Apps'

Again check for Microsoft Help HTML Executable, if that s not in the list, at the bottom, click 'Look for another app on this PC'

Navigate to find: C:\Windows\hh.exe

If that file does not exist, click the link below to download HTML Help Workshop and Documentation, which will contain hh.exe

.chm file opening problem

Thank you for writing to Microsoft Community Forums.

Sometimes, due to security reasons, the .CHM file you want to open may be blocked. You will have to unblock it to view the contents of the .CHM files.

Please try this step and let us know if it works:

1. Right click on the .CHM you want to open and click on Properties.

2. Under the General tab, check the option called Unblock.

3. Click on Apply and OK.

any chm reader app for windows 8 / microsoft surface pro which allows better reading experience than default app which opens chm files..

like highlighting, marking paragra[hs and viewing in full screen etc...
