Windows 10: Opening saved Word Pad documents from Windows 7 while using Windows 10 on new computer

I thought I was being smart by downloading a bunch Word Pad documents from my old computer with Windows 7 onto a thumb drive so I could transfer the docs onto my new computer with Windows 10.


Now I can't open any of the Word Pad documents without using Word. The only way to view them in Word is to buy Office.


Is there a way to open and copy my Word Pad docs without buying Office to open them.

Windows 10 Tweaks

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

• Open a new Explorer window.
• Click View in the ribbon.
• Click Options.
• Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
• Click OK

Word Pad and saving documents

Can I create 2 documents in word pad and save them to the same file? I don't have Office.

To troubleshoot your concern with accessing the documents created in your Word Pad, kindly refer to the steps provided below:

• Create a new Word Pad document (using the usual file format).
• Save the document then Open the document using
  Word Pad and verify if the file is corrupted and missing most the text like your previous documents.
  If the answer is yes go to Step 3.
• Create a new Word Pad document (using the usual format) and
  Save the document.
• Open Notepad, in the lower right corner choose the
  “All Files” then Open.
• Locate and Open the Word Pad document using Notepad.
• You should be able to see all the text you entered when creating the document in Step 3 and some odd looking characters which are Word Pad’s formatting characters.
