Windows 10: Opening Word font menu causes text to disappear

Upon clicking the Microsoft Word Font dropdown menu, the application will flicker, and thereafter moving my cursor over elements containing text causes them to go missing.

Given that the image above is the normal view of my screen, this is what happens after clicking the font menu.

The styles preview text is missing, along with the rest of the fonts.






The popup box that appears contains no text in the message.




This also affects other parts of the system such as File Explorer.


The text may sometimes reappear after a short period but I can still only see the two fonts in the dropdown menu and will also be fixed after a restart. I have disabled hardware graphics acceleration in the Advanced options tab as well.

Internet Explorer 11 Menu font size

Hi Larry,

Follow these steps to change the font size in IE11:

• Click Start menu or press Windows key on your keyboard.
• Type and click Control Panel.
• Click Appearance and Personalization and under Display, click
  Make text other items larger or smaller.
• Under Change only the text size, choose the Title bars
  in the drop-down menu and the desired font size on the drop-down menu beside it.

Text randomly disappears in most programs

After installing creators update, the text in most programs would disappear randomly, making them impossible to use.

Symptoms before this happens:

• Computer usually hangs (sometimes even mouse cursor freezes) for at least a few minutes
• If I happen to have task manager resource monitor up at the time of the freeze, read/write would be 0kbps, yet disk usage is 100%
• Usually I'd have some kind of CPU/GPU intensive program open like a game, but it's always minimized. In other words my computer never hangs while actually playing the game

Programs with missing text or glitched text:

• Desktop. Some letters get replaced with weird symbols, and hovering over icons with mouse would turn text a blurry black colour (see screenshot below)
  
  
• MS Paint
• Explorer (hovering over icons would cause text to disappear)
  
  
• CMD (completely blank black screen)
• Any windows prompts or confirmation popups
• Games
• MS Office apps like Word
• 
  

Programs that don't get affected:

• Internet browser (even foreign characters display fine)
• Windows context menus, like when you right click
• Task bar and start menu

I'm assuming something crashed, like fonts? But it's very weird why some programs or features don't get affected.

I Googled this and only found two "solutions", run SFC scannow, or uninstall "Comodo firewall". I've already ran SFC with no errors, and I don't have Comodo installed. Graphics drivers are all up to date (Intel HD + Nvidia Optimus). Also my issue is different as some programs aren't affected.

Simply restarting computer will fix this, but I'd like to find out what's causing it, as it's happening almost every day.

 

Microsoft Word changes the font type on another computer

Thank you for your answer. Normally, the first thing I do is copying the font file under "Fonts" folder.
When I open the file, I can see the font on the dropdown list but Word applies "Old English Text MT" font to titles.
I've never used this font and I know the title of the font I use is similar to this one but the point I do not understand is why Word decides to use a random font with similar title? Is there a setting/check box somehwere I'm missing? This is so annoying because I have never experienced it before and it is happening now.
