Windows 10: Optical Drive Reads Data Once and Won't Again Until Restart

I am currently seeing numerous tickets come in about people not being able to use their DVD/CD-ROM drive. I initially started by restarting the computer and inserting a DVD into the drive. The D:\ drive shows the name of the DVD I have inserted, and I can play the DVD. I then eject the DVD and reinsert it. The D:\ drive shows a disk is inserted, but I no longer get the name of the DVD. File Explorer shows that the disc is blank. The same thing happens if I insert a data CD. If I do any of the following, the drive will work one time, and one more time only, until one of these things are

Appreciate your detailed return. Your added steps really helped.

Assuming I did the steps correctly, this is where I am now.

Screenshot 12 shows my CD Disc shortcut on my desktop.
Screenshot 10 shows the CD Drive shortcut listed in the “Send to” listing.
Screenshot 11 shows the “Send to” listing after the steps were taken, but the CD drive name is not listed.

So, it appears the steps did not work for me. And, I did try the steps, “If it still won’t do ……” and still no luck.

Optical drive not reading/ writing or showing in Explorer

I may be that something is "blocking" the optical drive.

Can you restart the computer in Safe Mode and see if you can read a data disk.

 

Optical drive letters keep swapping

Open Disk Management (click Start, type diskmgmt.msc in the Search box, and press Enter).

1. In the lower pane, right-click on your optical drive and select "Change drive letter and paths"
2. Assign Y: to the first optical drive
3. Repeat step 1 for the second optical drive and assign Z:
