  1. Optimisation with new SSD

Fitted an SSD to my laptop, but boot speeds havnt really improved a great deal....approx 30-40 seconds similar to my HDD. I also have looked at ways to reduce writing to the SSD unnecessarily.

1- Added a 4GB USB pen to store the page file on.....set it up, but when Windows boots it complains something is wrong and that a temp page file has been set up on my boot disk.
2- created a RAM disk to store TMP TEMP files to, which seems to be working ok ( ram drive 250MB )
3- Tried moving google chrome cache to the USB pen ( needs 1GB apparently ) but that just doesn't seem to work, added extension to chrome shortcut, but again doesn't seem to work. ( some say doing this loses the bookmarks, but can't se this as he cache is seperate )

Maybe I should ignore 1 & 3 and be content the ram drive works....I hear that SSD's now have a much longer life...so maybe 1 & 3 are overkill and not necessary...

    opinions please....

    thanks

    :)

  2. Defragment and Optimise Drives on win 10

    Hi

I have solved my problem. It was disabled on services and it shows as optimise dives on services. I did not know, just after a research.

My disk is not ssd but just a quick question: why we should not optimise ssd?

    Optimisation with new SSD

You don't need to have any concern over the writes to an ssd these days. I would not be doing any of the steps you have taken. Just install the ssd, put OS on it and that's it, good to go.

It's funny - you install an SSD to make the computer run faster, then you put all the files that get accessed the most onto one of the slowest possible storage devices. Just doesn't make much sense....at least not to me. The files that the system uses the most should stay on the SSD.

And is the SSD on a Sata II or Sata III controller (if it is SATA). Needs to be on a SATA III controller to get maximum speed.

  6. unfortunately sata-2 but when I fit one to my PC that will be sata-3
ok will abandon plans, was interesting exercise anyway, always learn something new...LOL
will keep ram disk for TMP files, unless you think that is counter productive to the system speed, in which case will revert everything to the SSD....spent ages researching best SSD....so many good / bad reviews on same product...some unknown Chinese ones got surprisingly good reviews....in the end went for Sandisk...3 year guarantee.....fingers crossed...

Since you've only got 8 GB of memory, I would not waste any of it storing tmp files there. I would keep as much memory fee for system use to minimize the use of the pagefile.

Actually only got 3GB on the laptop and 8GB on the PC
one thing I would like to do....when I click on a link to download a file, it always saves it to documents, then I install it....there is no need to have it saved to my SSD that could easily be saved to a USB pen.....can't see how to change the default location

Depends on which browser you are using.

Ram disks are rather pointless these days really, and could be counter productive. The new memory compression algorithms make more effective use of available ram space.

  12. thanks for the explanations...

Just for info....is there any performance difference between using a small 200MB RAM disk just for temp files Vs using the default settings for temp files....

    thanks

  14. let me know how you get on, found ram disk prog SoftPerfect Ramdisk which meant to be fastest, recently made free....V3.4.7

Have decided to use 150MB RAM disk on laptop for Temp & Tmp files User & System....will save writing these to SSD, will save me erasing them and can't be any slower than writing to the SSD, when I do my PC will try the same....

    Hi,

Most likely a waste of time. Temp files should be erased by the system anyway.
You'd probably be better off leaving all available RAM to the OS.

Having an older SATA II only system sitting in the corner with a SATA II SSD drive I can assure you it's quite a bit faster with the SSD than with any HDD. Boot time, whatever.
Without the SSD I would have scrapped it years ago.

    Cheers, *Wink
