"Optimization not available" for SSD in laptop; true or a fix?

Thank you for any help you can provide. I have an aging laptop that I put an SSD into in an attempt to make it more useable. It is an older Compaq Presario with 2GB ram, and I am running Windows 10, 32 bit. When I go to the hard drive properties and click on the "tools" tab, and then click on the "optimize" button, under the "current status" column it gives "Optimization not available". I have read similar threads in this forum and online, but none seem to exactly apply to my situation, so I have not been able to fix this. I do not know if the TRIM function is not available because my system is old, or if there is something else going on that may be modified to make it work. I also have another old laptop that is just slightly newer than this one, also with Windows 10 32 bit, and the same model SSD works in that system without this error message. If there is nothing I can do about it, then I will have to live with it. But if there is some workaround to get the optimization working, then I would like to fix it. I have run the administrator command fsutil behavior query DisableDeleteNotify and it comes back with a result of "0". I appreciate any help with this. Also, can someone tell me what the bottom line impact is if I cannot get the trim optimization working? How big of a hit is it to performance? Is it something I can do on a regular basis with a utility instead? Thanks.

    :)

Optimization not available on SSD after WIN10 upgrade

I upgraded a laptop from WIN7 Home to WIN10. WIN10 recognizes the SSD on the laptop but it will not allow me to optimize it using the optimize tool. The message is "Optimization not available". I checked and TRIM is running. The SSD is a Samsung EVO
250G drive. Is anyone else having this problem.

" Waiting for approval " until when !????

It means that it's waiting for approval from your operator and it has nothing to do with Nokia.

You could call your operator and ask about this approval, someone in technical service may know that how long it takes to approve the newest firmware. (For some reason, every operator has to approve the firmware updates and only after that their clients
    can do the update)

    Hi,
Welcome to the forums, go to Device manager and try updating AHCI driver for your SSD.

Thank you for the reply. Here is what I THINK is applicable to drivers in Device Manager (but feel free to correct me as I am not sure). Under "IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers", there are 3 items: 1) ATA channel 0, 2)Intel ICH7 Family Ultra ATA Storage Controllers-37DF, and 3) Intel ICH7M/MDH SATA AHCI Controller. When I double click any of these, then select driver and click on "update driver" it tells me that the best driver software for your device is already installed. I also went to intel.com and tried using their automatic driver updater and it told me that no drivers were found.

There is also something in Device Manager called "Storage Controllers" which has one item under it called "Microsoft Storage Space Controller". Again when I check the driver for that it tells me the best driver is already installed.

Any ideas? And thank you very much for the help.

I believe that in the tools tab of the hard drive properties, Optimize means defragment. You never, under any circumstances defrag an SSD. Windows has turned off defragmentation for your SSD which is why it won't work.

Windows does recognize the drive as an SSD. The optimize function is supposed to defrag conventional hard drives and TRIM SSDs. This function does work on my other laptops with SSDs, and with them, when I click "optimize" it shows that it is "trimming". But on this laptop, that option is not available "Optimization not available", so there is something else going on with this laptop.

Can you execute "defrag /C /O" from a command prompt and report what it may or may not do for the drive in question?

OK, I had trouble finding the 9.1.1.1016, but I downloaded a package from Toshiba that appeared to be it. When I installed, it said I had a more current software, but I installed anyway. This is what I have in Device Manager now: Under IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers, there are 3 things: 1) ATA Channel 0, which has a driver installed from Microsoft dated (mm-dd-yr) 6-21-2006 version 10.0.10586.0; 2) Intel ICH7 Family Ultra ATA Storage Controllers - 27DF with driver dated 08-05-2009 version 9.1.1.1016, and 3) Intel IC7M/MDH SATA AHCI Controller with driver dated 04-05-2010 version 8.9.8.1005. Does it look like the correct drivers? Also, under Storage Controllers there is one item, Microsoft Storage Spaces Controller with driver dated 06-21-2006 version 10.0.10586.0 With these, I still get the same results when I try to optimize ("Optimization not available")

So next I tried installing the ones from the "Download Intel RST RAID driver" link you sent and I got an error message "The setup program ended prematurely because of the following error: This platform is not supported." I checked the installed drivers of the 4 items described above in Device Manager and all the drivers are still the same, and I still get the same results when I try to optimize.
    Thank you for your help.

OK, so defrag did successfully trim your drive. "The operation requested..." - will see what I can find - speculation is that defrag tried to defrag but recognized that's not appropriate on demand for an SSD.

P.S. Can't spend alot of time on it at the moment but the first Google hits on this error message seem to be clustered around AHCI driver issues - I see brummyfan has you on that track. Will follow your issue with interest as time permits.

"Optimization not available" for SSD in laptop; true or a fix?

Yes, I definitely got the impression it could be a driver issue, but I was not having success trying new ones. However now it is solved, Yay!!! Even though Device Manager told me I had the best drivers installed when I told it to check for updates automatically, I still felt it was a driver problem, so I went ahead and instead told it to "browse my computer for driver software". There were two results; the existing Intel driver and another called "Standard SATA AHCI Controller". So I picked the Standard one instead and now everything works great and I am able to optimize. The driver is Microsoft 06-21-2006 version 10.0.10586.0.

Thank you all for the help. It feels great to have everything working as it should. Well, almost...I have a slight problem with Windows Defender that I will post in the appropriate forum after this.
