  1. Optimization not available suddenly on SSD

    Hi,

I have a strange problem. Suddenly optimization is not available for my SSD partitions in the Win 10 defrag tool. Before you say defrag is not done on SSD let me say that I checked and the Win 10 tool auto detects its SSD and preforms TRIM commands instead of normal defrag if it's a SSD so it should be working better yet the screenshot shows it did run on 5.8.2015 .. then suddenly it become unavailable. I haven't changed anything let me say:

Optimization not available suddenly on SSD [IMG]

Now I checked that TRIM is indeed enabled and should be working proven with the below screen:

Optimization not available suddenly on SSD [IMG]

I also ran the "WinSAT formal" command again and made sure "optimize service" is running in services.. I don't really know what this could be,.. the drive is a Samsung SSD 850 EVO on a normal PC, I have AHCI mode enabled in bios. Is this possibly a problem because I upgraded from 8.1 and didn't do a clean install? You think it would fix the problem if I clean installed? Is TRIM working or this optimization not available actually means it don't currently do TRIM?

    Thanks for answer.

    :)

Optimization not available on SSD after WIN10 upgrade

    Thanks for the reply Ruth.

The SSD is a Samsung 850 EVO 250Gb drive. (the firmware is up-to-date)

The listed storage controller (under Device Manager) is a "Microsoft Storage Spaces Controller" dtd 6/21/2006. I tried to update it but the response was that I had the most up-to-date driver. I also tried to update the AMD SATA driver (dtd 4/7/2010) but
got the same response, e.g. I had the most up-to-date driver. I can verify TRIM is running, and the Samsung Magician utility can also optimize the drive but since WIN10 detects the device as an SSD it seems like it should be able to optimize it. The CPU
is a AMD E-450. I know it is an old laptop but I would like to get it running as efficiently as possible.

Researching this a little, it appears this error frequently happens when there is a mismatch in the device and port I/O rates...e.g. the laptop port is SATA I (1.5Gb) while the SSD is capable of SATA III speeds (6Gb). Maybe this is a clue to what is generating
    the error.

Any help would really be appreciated.

    vr

  3. Optimization not available on SSD after WIN10 upgrade

    Hi,

Thank you for posting on Microsoft Communities.

I will be glad to help you with the issue you have with the computer. I understand the frustration when things don't work the way it should.

What is the exact model of your Samsung EVO 250G ?

The issue could because of outdated Storage Controller drivers.

I suggest you to download the latest Intel Rapid Storage Technology drivers for Windows 10 from the Intel website.

Go to Device Manager > Storage Controllers, right clicked on the listed Intel SATA RAID Controller Device and update the drivers .

One you update the drivers, please restart the computer and check.

Please reply with the results, we will be glad to help you further.

    Thank you.

Optimization not available suddenly on SSD

I have the exact same problem. I changed my hard drives to SSDs in 4 different computers and upgraded them all from windows 7 to 10. All of them display "optimization not available". I checked that the trim function is on. Any advice on how to activate this?

To be clear are you saying it worked on 8.1 and never worked on 10, or did it work on 10 for a while and then stop working? For what it's worth I have an SSD and after upgrading from 7 to 10 the option to optimize/trim the SSD continues to work.

  6. As far as I know, that's how it should be. The point of TRIM is that the drive handles the cleanup so you don't have to. In previous versions of Windows, such as 8/8.1, defrag was disabled on SSDs. If you have confirmed that TRIM is active, then the system is doing what it is supposed to. You shouldn't be able to optimize/defrag your SSD.

The C: drive (assuming that's your normal boot/system drive) should be able to be optimized on demand or by schedule, whether SSD or HDD. Note I did not say "defragged", even though there are assertions out there that Windows will defrag an SSD periodically as needed.

Here is some updated (Dec '14, but haven't seen it discredited or changed since Windows 10 RTM) scoop on optimization of SSDs in Windows - http://www.hanselman.com/blog/TheRea...ntYourSSD.aspx

You seem to have a problem indeed. I can confirm that optimization should be available for you.
Here is what I have on my SSD drive:

Try going to Device Manager go to properties for your SSD>Driver>Update Driver>Browse my computer for driver software> Let me pick from a list of device drivers>It should just show 1 driver>Click next>let it install>reboot and see if you can now Trim.

If this doesn't work do an in place upgrade and keep settings and files, that should repair your everything. If you do this after the upgrade check you Time Zone settings and sync the time in Date &Time. also reset all your Location settings in Settings app>Privacy.

Be sure to read everything through first: How to Do a Repair Install of Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade

I sure hope these "assertions" are completely wrong. SSD's should never be defragged. A defragged SSD will be filled with "writes" and would require a secure erase to bring it back to normal operating efficiency. If you have any sources that claim that does happen, please post them.

  11. It would appear that even with Optimisation turned OFF, Windows still performs this task.

I provided that in post # 5 - although you're right to call me out on casually using the word "defrag", that was a mistake on my part - there are other things Windows will do besides trim, I think the term "garbage collection" is applicable. I'll have to refresh myself on the terminology before spouting again.*Redface

See "Conclusion" in the referred link. I think, although I read this thoroughly some time back, his use of the phrase "a kind of defragmentation" threw me into the error - mine nonetheless.

Word Man, my apologies if I came across as "calling you out". I was concerned if there was a credible source that had seen Windows actually defragging SSD's. Just glad to hear that is not the case. Your posts are very helpful and if I came across wrong, my apologies.

  15. I've managed to solve this issue with updating the AHCI driver indeed like some of you suggested.

I've noticed that the controller for AHCI was using default Windows drivers dating back to 2006 I think.. I've googled around and found this really great page: Intel RST/RSTe Drivers (newest: v14.6.0.1029 WHQL/v4.3.0.1198 WHQL)

On the site everything is explained and there is quite a few drivers. I think I've choosen the latest one with IastorA.sys because my chipset is the older ICH10R one. After this TRIM and optimize is not shadowed anymore and everything is working.

Hope somebody will help himself with this,
