Windows 10: Optimization not available suddenly on SSD

I noticed in post #6 that it is supposed to run weekly, but it has not run in 20 days. Mine was the same way, had not run in 19 days but set for weekly. Maybe they actually meant "weakly". Har-de-har. Another MS mystery.

Yep, that's the same article I posted a link to in post # 5. It's all good, no worries. It looks like a lot of people are alarmed and concerned that, even though the label has changed on this interface to the more generic "optimize" (I reckon "optimise" in Queen's English), current Windows versions will do a full on files defragmentation, relocation, and disk consolidation as is done for HDDs - I don't think that's the case. Hanselman's article and some others I've read say that it will on occasion do a bit more than simply TRIM an SSD, perhaps only defragging the MFT. Anyways, looks like OP got the mystery resolved and is OK now.

 

My SSD is made by Intel SSD 520 series 240GB and I turned OFF letting Windows 10 optimize my ssd weeks ago. I just checked and Windows has done nothing to my ssd. I have always used the Intel toolbox to trim my ssd. I have their latest release installed, which always includes latest drivers too. I prefer to use the utility that is made from who made my ssd then allow windows 10 to do anything to my ssd. Just my 2 cents on this issue.

I have the same situation with an SSD running W10.
You can use Windows Command Prompt (run as Administrator) to Defrag your drive -
>defrag /?
will give you the syntax and options
>defrag c: /U /V
is what I use

defrag will consolidate not only the files, but also the free space on the drive, which gets fragmented too.

 

Thanks for this. I see that there's a switch specifically for trim. I must give it a try.

 

Recalling an earlier post (maybe another thread), I just tried "defrag /C /O" from an elevated command prompt and it worked fine, including optimizing the recovery partition (again, not REALLY needed). The defrag GUI now shows all volumes at OK & 0 days since last run.

I have this problem after moving my SSD to a SYBA SI-PEX40062 PCI-Express 2.0 x2 Low Profile Ready SATA III (6.0Gb/s) Controller Card. The drive comes up "Optimization not available". The controller card drivers are old 6/21/2013 Driver version: 1.2.0.1038 Marvell 92xx SATA 6G Controller Properties. Trim is still enabled if I check it in CMD.

Anyone have a suggestion how to fix this.

I found the latest drivers for this sata card on station-drivers.com but they also caused the drive to become Optimization not available shortly after log in. If I uninstall the drivers and use the windows driver then I have the option to optimize the drive no problem and I see disk usage go up 20% when I click it, which I would guess that Trim is working.
