    Optimize and Defrag Drives in Windows 10

    Actually... ever since I upgraded my PC from 7 to 10, my computer has gone progressively slower, most likely from the different fragments on the OS drive (which is drive C on my computer). When I try fixing it manually, it thinks that my computer uses Solid-State Drives, and tries fixing it that way. Only problem? I have an HDD for the OS drive. I don't know how to get it to work properly for an HDD... which is why I came here.

    Anyone have any idea how to fix this issue? I want to defragment and optimize my HDD, but it's a major issue for me, especially since I have zero idea how to get it to register my drives as HDD.

    Also, I'd share a screenshot of my computer's defragmentation program, but I don't remember how to take a screenshot with just the app I want to screenshot.

    Hello Xamusel, and welcome to Ten Forums. *Smile

    What brand and model number is your HDD?

    Are you sure that it's not a hybrid HDD/SSD?

    Step 1 in the tutorial below has links for options to take screenshots with.

    Okay, so I just took the side of my tower computer apart, and found out that my HDD is a Western Digital brand. Model number is WD15EARX.

    Also, I wouldn't know how to determine if my computer is a hybrid, sadly... sorry about that.

    Thanks for the link, by the way, though I was more referring to how to do so from the keyboard side of things.

    It's not a hybrid.

    Have you tried connecting it to a different SATA port on the motherboard to see if it's then detected as HDD?

    Can you post a screenshot showing where it says it's a SSD?

    Thanks for confirming it's not a hybrid.

    As for the connections... I'm not an IT guy, but I'll see if that helps, somehow (will need to turn the computer off and do it manually in order to do that).

    Also, the screenshot... hang on a sec, putting it into an attachment now.

    Seems like there'd be no harm in following the suggestion I made to HHawk in post #10 above just to see if Windows changes its view of the OS disk.

    Word Man, thank you for what you suggested... it now works like a charm! I'm about to defrag my computer now, the first time in at least 3 months!

    I now have the same issue (check screenshot) on my PC after running the november Windows 10 (big) update. Not only did it mess up defrag, but also tons of other things. Though I thought I had fixed most, I only discovered the defrag issue a few mins ago.

    I thought MS had fixed the november update? That's why I kept postponing it.

    I already ran the winsat formal command, but still didn't fix anything. I still cannot defrag my SSD partitions. :|

    Any ideas?

    //update 1

    I also tried running defrag /C /O but that resulted in some kind of back-up warning with error 0x8900002A.
    Really lame MS Windows update. *Sad(

    //update 2
    Well I managed to fix this by reinstalling my Intel RAID drivers. I use customised raid drivers from another site: Fernando's Win-RAID Forum (Storage Drivers - BIOS Modding). They have tons of RAID drivers and information. Still lame that MS decided to install other drivers though. Oh well problem solved!

    Windows or any other good defrag program will NOT ALLOW you to defrag ANY SSD!!!! Defragging any SSD will shorten its life span. Only thing windows should allow you to do is use the TRIM command, and that's all.

    Mike, HHawk went and used that bad word "defrag" again, eh? Note that the /O switch tells defrag to do the optimization proper for the media type.

    When I run that command for my single SSD, it runs (only) TRIM on both my OS partition and my WinRE partition - that is clear from the output of the command. As long as Windows isn't confused about the media type of the disk, that should be OK.

    Your warning is well taken, however.

    Hopefully he does now. *Smile

    Obviously I do know the difference. I made a typo, but the typo wasn't the issue here. The issue was that after the Windows update I couldn't 'optimize' my SSD's anymore.

    Anyways, I solved this by reinstalling my RAID drivers with modded ones (for better performance as well).
