    Order of desktop icons?

I have my desktop icons on this new Win 10 PC set to sort by Name. But they are not!

Why is that? Is there something obvious that I'm missing?

And, supposing they were all sorted exactly by name, does that mean you'd view them by column? IOW, say A-M in the first vertical column, N-T in the next, etc.

  2. Windows 10 Desktop alphabetic order of shortcuts

Auto arrange icons is not checked.

Align icons to grid is checked, but this is probably not relevant.

    Any ideas?

  3. Windows 10 Desktop alphabetic order of shortcuts

    Hi Barry,

This behavior could be due to incorrect settings, corrupted system files, or third-party software. At this point in time, what we need to do is perform troubleshooting to isolate the issue and identify what's causing it so that we can find a permanent fix
to resolve it. See methods below:

Method 1: Perform a clean boot. Doing so will help us identify any software conflicts that could be causing the desktop icons to re-arrange. For the steps on how to do so, here is a
    support article for your reference.

Note: Refer to the How to reset the computer to start normally after clean boot troubleshooting section afterwards.

Method 2: Start your PC in safe mode. This will start your PC in a basic state, using a limited set of files and drivers. You may refer to this
support article on how to start your PC in safe mode in Windows 10.

Method 3: Use the System File Checker (SFC.exe) tool to find and fix missing or corrupted system files. The steps on how you can run SFC.exe can be found in this
    support article.

Method 4: Create a test user to check if the issue is specific to the current user. This
support article can help you out on how to create a local user or administrator
    account in Windows 10.

Kindly update us on the outcome.

    Order of desktop icons?

I just looked at the screenshot that you provided and your icons are sorted alphabetically by name.

    How did you want them?

What do you have your view settings set to? I just did the sort by name and each and every icon sorted alphabetically, except for system icons which all came first.

You might have misunderstood PJLLB's question. He asked about your VIEW SETTINGS!!!!

View: Bottom three checkmarked and (as screenshot showed) Small icons selected.

But why would that be relevant to the Sort Order?

Anyway, pleased to report that the issue is now, er, sorted. I discovered that there were also items in the \users\public\Desktop as well as in \users\terry\Desktop. I moved them across and now all OK. I also note that any folders are apparently shown first, like the three in my illustration.

Terry, you still didn't reply to my question. Your screen shot show sort-by options, not view options.
