Windows 10: Out of options to recover START, Search and Tiles

Sometime in December, 2015 my keyboard Windows button and my task bar Start menu and Search stopped working and without the ability to START I lost all the tiles. I have followed suggestion after suggestion about how to fix this apparently not-so-uncommon problem and nothing has fixed this issue. Windows has now become very cumbersome to use.

I have given up on Windows 10 and it's too late to recover Windows 7 (Windows 7 was great). Really wish this had not happened as I have been a Windows user since version 3.1.

I guess I posted this here because I'm frustrated with the problem and need to air it out. Must buy a new PC.

Email tile (and app link) disappeared.

I was moving tiles on the start screen and the email tile disappeared. I can't find it in the apps list. How can I recover this email tile?

I understand your concern regarding the issue that you are facing.

Are you facing this issue with this user account or all the user account? If all the user account follow Method 1 & 2.

I suggest you to follow the steps below and check if it helps

Method 1:

Perform System File Check (SFC), and then check if this fixes the issue.

Follow the steps:

a. Press “Windows Key + Q” to open Charms Bar.

b. Type “cmd” without quotes in the search box.

c. On the left pane, right click on the “cmd” option and select “Run as Administrator”.

d. Type ‘sfc /scannow’ without quotes and hit enter.



Note: It may ask for windows installation DVD to fix and to enable SFC to make more than minor repairs. Some files saved on your computer might get deleted when fixing corrupted files.

Method 2:

I would also suggest you to run the System update readiness command. It detects incorrect manifests, cabinets or registry data, it may replace the incorrect data with corrected version available. Follow the steps.

• Press Windows key + X.
• Click command prompt (Run as administrator).
• In the Administrator: Command Prompt window, type the following commands. Press
  Enter key after each command:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

To close the Administrator: Command prompt window, type
Exit, and then press Enter.

Instead of buying a new computer, why don't you just download an ISO file of Windows 10 and do a clean install. That should fix all of your problems.

 

Thanks for the suggestion, Rocky. I re-installed W10. Lost most of applications that were not original to this Gateway. It was a machine that Best Buy had declared DOA when my daughter took it in for repair so I bought her a new one and fixed this one myself. Only a couple of work-arounds needed to get it going. Anyway, I now have a working task bar with start menu, Cortana and tiles.
