Windows 10: Outlook Mail app corrupted?

My Outlook Mail has not downloaded any mails for over 30 days. A notification repeatedly says its settings need updating (password?) and to click Fix. Fix does not work. I have checked all I can, including the password which is correct and works. Fortunately I can keep track of incoming mails with Thunderbird and even with Outlook Mail online, showing that there is a fault in my desktop app. However, I cannot re-install the app because downloading from the Store is kaput at present. I have found an article on this 'new and not uncommon problem', but it offers a host of 'fixes', too many and too complex for me.

Any suggestions?

Hi Maria, there is no app in the store named "Outlook".

Also, I already have Outlook installed.

Please do not confuse the 2 programs - "Mail or Mail & Calendar" and "Outlook".

Mail & Calendar is the std program installed with Windows 10, whereas Outlook is the supposedly premium Microsoft Mail Client.

And open MS Outlook 2016 on the desktop just like before instead of using the Mail App. Don't use the Mail App with Office Outlook 2016. The Mail App is better used for free web mail like Hotmail--now called Outlook.com, Yahoo, etc.

Outlook.com is not related to Office's Outlook, just a bad recycled app name.

 

Hi, you are reporting a number of problems in at least one other thread.

Have you checked your disk?
Crystal Diskinfo (free).
If it shows good, then

From an admin command prompt
[Windows key + X, click command prompt (admin)]
chkdsk C: /F
Your PC will need to restart.
Make sure the result is clear or fixed- else do not proceed.
Post back the result, which you can get after a restart as follows:

If good, then from an admin prompt run
sfc /scannow

If that (still) fails, I suggest you do an in-place upgrade repair install.

If you still have problems, try creating a new user account, and see if things work in that. If so, your user account is damaged in some manner.

I think Crystal Disk is not compatible with my C drive, which is an eMMc and does not generate SMART reports. I have not found a similar but compatible app. I do have disk checkers in some computer management apps (Glary, ASC, etc) which report the disk to be OK, but I think they are only using Chkdsk anyway. I had to give up on Ashampoo's checker as it was taking far too long (it warned it would) ---- I may give it another try.)

Sfc/scannow has repaired some faults but reports it cannot repair others --- the logs are beyond me. DISM has not been able to run the last few times I have tried it.

 

Ok, chkdsk has passed; as a final check on your disk you could try Macrorit Diskscanner (free). It does a surface check.

Given the SFC and DISM failures, I'd return to the idea of an in-place upgrade repair install; it's hardly worth trying to fix individual problems.

However you have very limited disk space, and that procedure requires something like 5+Gb free + as much space as your current Windows folder. You seem to be dual booting as well.

This keeps almost everything- except some settings.

Failing that, assuming your disk is good, you could do a clean install.

Note the new upgrade (Creator's) will have similar space requirements, being the same procedure.
