    Could be, my Provider is 3-UK and looks like T-Mobile UK have the same field as per Gary Ownen's comment above. Just spoken to 3 Support and they claim that the OS registeres the number of the SIM card initially put in and it will keep that "forever".
    Not sure how scientific that answer is though, I would have thought a hard reset would wipe that out if it was correct
