  2. Permission/Ownership Issues WindowsApps Folders...

    I have been tearing what little hair I have left out of my head trying to copy a file from my desktop to the appropriate folder in the Kodi folder buried in the XBMC… folder in Windowsapps in a brand-new fairly high-end laptop running Windows 10 Pro. I cannot get beyond first what appears to be a UAC “Destination Folder Access Denied” error message saying “You’ll need to provide administrative permission to copy to this folder.” If I click on the UAC “continue” button I get another “Destination Folder Access Denied” error box saying “You need permission to perform this action.” The second error box has only “Try Again” and “Cancel” buttons. Nothing is listed under “More details” in either error box.

    Here is most of what I have tried:

    1. changing ownership of Windowsapps and all folders below it to my Microsoft account user and granting full-control permissions to Windowsapps and all folders below it;
    2. changing ownership to administrators group for Windowsapps and all folders below it and granting full-control permissions to Windowsapps and all folders below it;
    3. enabling the “hidden” administrator account, going back to my Microsoft user account and granting full-control rights to the administrator account, returning to the administrator account, taking control with that account, granting full control permission to Windowsapps and all folders below it;
    4. creating a new administrator account and repeating 3;
    5. completely disabling UAC through the registry, once in the default administrator account and once in my Microsoft account user.
    6. adding and using the “Take Ownership” context option on a Windowsapps folder as described in the Tutorial at Add Take Ownership to Context Menu in Windows 10 ; and
    7. running the following commands in an administrator command window:

    Code:
    as suggested at: Permission/Ownership Issues WindowsApps Folders... - Windows 10 Forums
    In fact, even if I do an explicit copy from an administrator command window, I get an “access is denied” notice.

    None of the many sources I have looked at online are of any help in dealing with this blockage. Please help — not only do I need to get full-control access to Windowsapps and its subfolders for this purpose, I also need to get full-control permission to Windowsapps folders in order to get rid of an annoying McAffee startup.exe which pops an error box on every boot up even though I removed McAffee in the normal way.

    How can I get assured access to Windowsapps folders???

  3. Drives, Folders & Files - Ownership, Permissions, Settings & Privacy

    Drives, Folders & Files - Ownership, Permissions, Settings & Privacy

    If you have issues with being denied access to items that you have Admin right to, or want to Share, Change Ownership, set Permissions and even set a Personal Folder for only access to you on a Shared additional Drive, then this should help you complete
    all that and more to setup your Home Network, Sharing, Privacy and Security.

    1. Ok so to change ownership of your drives, folders or files, do this:

    First go to network & sharing and if you are joined to the Home Group, stop sharing files and devices. Then UNJOIN IT. (For Drives and Folders Ownership).

    NOTE: It is useless and being discontinued in the next creators pack or soon after.

    ***Do this to all PC's/Laptops on your Home Network.

    Now restart PC and reboot modem: unplug power 30 seconds, plug in, when connected to internet then proceed.

    2. Now open THIS PC, right click on the drive and select Properties>>Sharing Tab>>Advanced and make sure sharing is OFF. APPLY, OK., APPLY

    Ownership and permissions of my drives and my folders change without my knowledge and I am... 53934927-3fee-44ed-8c63-ad648b6561f9?upload=true.jpg

    Note: On Sharing Tab, ignore the Share Button as it is for the HomeGroup Sharing and you have Un-joined it at least for now. If you decide to Join again and use HomeGroup, which is useless, you can set users and permissions in this section.

    3. Now select the Security Tab>>Advanced

    Select "Change"

    Now select Advanced>>Find Now

    In the list select "Administrator(S)<<< (Double Click)

    OK, OK

    Now select the box on top, Replace Owner on subcontainers and objects and select Apply on bottom right, confirm if prompted. (If you get some pop ups about errors for certain items just select ok and let it finish taking ownership. (These will be the hidden
    recycle bin and volume information objects).

    Now select OK, APPLY, CLOSE.

    Note: if inherited is showing and enabled on bottom left, before or after taking ownership, you need to disable it right away. Preferably before taking ownership if you can.

    Also, in the Auditing Tab, if it has any items listed there, remove them all before or after taking ownership. Preferably before taking ownership if you can.

    >RESTART PC.

    Ownership and permissions of my drives and my folders change without my knowledge and I am... ac3f94da-cb2c-49b2-adcd-03dd4910791d?upload=true.jpg

    4. Now after PC Restart, go back to advanced to the Ownership and Permissions Window, remove inheritance and auditing items if you were not able to before. Look on top and see if Administrators are now the Owner of the drive or folder.

    Now there should be 5 Items in the list, Administrators, System, Users, Authenticated Users & Everyone (Which Everyone is the user name Windows uses when you share a Drive or Folder or File). See Photo for the permissions allowed for each User or Item and
    set them as shown.

    Now if your user name is not in the list, then select ADD>>Select a Principle

    Advanced>>Find Now>> and find your User Name and double click it and OK.

    ("I used Dial up for an example to show you, as I will delete it when finished here").

    Now select advanced permissions for you or any Item you added, select FULL CONTROL for You or Administrator(s). OK, APPLY, OK (on Verify). OK, APPLY, CLOSE.

    The other permissions should already be correct as shown in photo. You can change their permissions as you did adding Full Control for you.

    Note: The SEAHAWKS in my case is the Name of my PC. Your name will display there with your PC name on select Items.

    Ownership and permissions of my drives and my folders change without my knowledge and I am... dbc98199-bc46-443c-9042-1be1f03f216c?upload=true.jpg

    Now after you have all 6 in the list and permissions set with No Auditing Items and No Inheritance.

    >Restart PC.

    You are all set and You and Administrators have Full Access Permissions and Control of that Item or Drive.

    5. Now I would do the following:

    If you plan on Re-Joining the HomeGroup, then join it on all PC's on your Home Network.

    ***If you want to now Share that file, folder or drive with HomeGroup, then in Sharing Tab for that Item, select the "Share Button" and select the People who can have access and select the permissions for them and complete the Sharing Wizard.

    **For sharing across Users and PC's on Home Network, select the "Advanced Sharing Button", check the box to share, select Permissions, and for "Everyone User" they have read only permissions by default. You can add more permissions, but be careful what you
    allow. You do not need to add any more users or permissions to share this way.

    When you have everything set up and this includes other Users on the same PC or PC's and on Network, Then I advise to reboot your Modem again and then restart all PC's on your Home Network to set your network.

    ***For all the information you need to protect your Network and Share across Users on the same PC or across your Network, see the following 2 links:

    Redirecting

    Redirecting

    Now if you have an extra Drive and want to store your personal Information on it and want others users on your PC or PC's across your network to have access to the drive for use or storage, but do not want them accessing your personal Items, then do this.

    Follow the instructions above the same for You and Admins. But make sure Homegroup and Network Sharing for this Folder is OFF.

    Now go back to Owner for this FOLDER ONLY, and select Change Owner, Select your USER ACCOUNT NAME, SET FULL CONTROL on PERMISSIONS, No Inheritance or Auditing. Close out and >Restart PC.

    Go back there and now remove every User in the list EXCEPT YOU and SYSTEM and keep both FULL CONTROL. >Restart PC.

    Each User on this PC or Across the Network can do this logged into their account to protect their files and privacy.

    After this is completed for all users, reboot modem and Restart all PC's on Home network to set your network.

    Folder Permissions not working on some folders

    As found in this ServerFault answer, try with the following steps to change ownership and permission on many files and folders in one batch from command line:

    • Open a Command Prompt "As Administrator"
    • Run the following commands:

    takeown /f YourDrive:\YourFolder /r /d y

    icacls YourDrive:\YourFolder /grant administrators:F /T
