Windows 10: Pagination

I am formatting a book in Word and trying to get the page numbers to begin after the Table of Contents. I put in a page break and then inserted page numbers into the footer- starting with page 1 after the Table of Contents. All went well, but then I went to delete the page numbers before the break. When I deleted the number in the prior footer, all the numbers throughout the document both sides of the break were deleted. I went back to the footer and noted where the footer was "Same as previous". I then tried to delete other pages numbers in the prior section break but all numbers in bo

Thank you for your response. I looked at the websites you suggested but these did not directly work. However I was able to get the pagination I was looking for by working around the suggestions. I have to use Crt+Fn+F9 to create the first set of brackets
but can only remove them by right clicking inside teh brackets and choosing 'toggle' This seems to work

I frequently use automatic pagination (Page x of y pages) On my new laptop I use Ctrl-Alt-F9 to get a field code for pagination. What I cannot due is remove the field code. On my old computer this was done by keying F9 -- this now
returns me to a screensaver as does Alt9. I would appreciate help

CTRL+ALT+F9 should work as a toggle. Try pressing it again to remove pagination.
