Windows 10: Password storage in Windows Credentials and Edge

I am running Windows 10 Pro version 2004 build 19041.113 and Edge Version 80.0.361.66 Official build 64-bit. Windows stores passwords in "Credentials" and Edge also stores them. My question is which one is active or are they both? From time to time i get "issues" with passwords and find Credentials saves every variant i have used even for one web site. This makes managing passwords under either most challenging.


I would like to see a "Find" facility in both systems as well as a sort facility to make password management easier.


I would also like to suggest that if a password for a specific web site is changed, the old password record is either altered or deleted.

Do you really suggest that one should navigate to tons of websites and use their "Forgot password?" feature to be able to save the web credentials in the new environment????

There is one workaround where at least the export is fast:

• Export Web Credentials with a third-party tool, e.g. VaultPasswordView from
  www.nirsoft.net
• Navigate to the sites one by one.
• Login using the exported credential info.
• Save password when the browser asks.

If Windows Credentials can be exported and then imported through the UI then what kind of "security and privacy purpose" is it to forbid the same mechanism for Web Credentials?

Let's say ok, there are some "security and privacy purposes" against exporting passwords.

But what about importing or creating new Web Credentials?

Why is it also impossible?

How does IE/Edge stores the credentials in the Web Credentials?

What API do they call to save the credentials?

These, and probably more articles, indicate that the passwords in Credential Manager are shared, but you could run your own test.

Remove login data for a website or two, visit the websites with Edge and see if Internet Explorer can use that saved login data.

Actually, since Cookies are not shared, you will probably have to enter the username (and maybe the password) on the first visit.

Password issue

After going through the steps to make a new password, after a week or two, my login credentials are no longer valid. I'm forced to make a new password all over again. It seems to happen if I don't login in a certain period of time. Does our passwords expire???
