Windows 10: PC completely freezes at random after updating from w10 1909 to update 2004

I'm having issues with my PC completely freezing at random times, mouse wont move, screen is frozen on the last frame.

At first I thought it might be caused by high GPU/CPU usage while playing games, but today it crashed while watching only youtube with several extra tabs open (firefox), no applications that require high processing were opened. This never happened on version 1909. I don't have a system restore and I really dont want to go through the pain of reinstalling an old version..

My specs are 7700k, gtx 1080 (cpu & gpu both factory clocks), 16gb ram at 3000mhz. Windows 10 is installed on my SSD.

Did anyone have this issue and managed to solve it?

Freezes after 1909->2004 update

after the latest windows10 update from 1909 to 2004 I started to have some random freeze (without blue screen), sometime one a day, sometime two a day, and sometime no freeze in a day, all was working fine with 1909 (and previously with 1903).

someone pointed out the "intel sata ahci controller" driver that was updated together in this windows10 upgrade: before with 1909 I had the version 10.0.18362.1, now I see 16.8.3.1003. it is possible that this driver causes this freeze? in the hp driver download page or via hp assistant no new driver is available, can I use the previous one or use the generic microsoft one? I tryed to uninstall that driver, but after doing that windows was broken and did not start up at all (then restarted from previous restore point)


if it may help: PC is notebook HP 250 G5, I replaced the 500gb hd with 250gb samsung 860 evo 2 years ago

Hi dalchina. Good news, I followed your suggestion and reinstalled the update and now it appears as "installed correctly" *Biggrin Maybe it was not necessary to run the Windows Update Troubleshooter or maybe if necessary. But using it I do not think it could have worsened something. The installation was very fast, unlike the first time it showed step 1 and step 2 completed.

Random freezes or shut downs

Completely random freezing/shutdowns on a system with no recent hardware changes, and hard drive, memory, and PSU fine, usually means a software issue (file corruption or malicious software). I suggest following DavidV's recommendations.
