Windows 10: PC Keeps Freezing and Restarting After Exiting Games

When exiting games my computer has started to freeze and become unresponsive and its typically met with a full system restart, otherwise I have to do a forced shutdown. It started sporadically on certain games a couple of months back but has been getting worse as of late and impacting almost all games now. I suspect it may be a GPU driver issue I have an RTX 4090 but have done full clean driver installs but the issue remains. Wondering if someone could analyse any dumpstack / log files to identify the issue?

Pc keeps restarting by itself or freezes completely

Hello my pc keeps restarting by itself or sometimes it just freezes I dont know what’s going on I’ll be in game and it’ll just restart and I’ll have to boot up whatever I was on or sometime my whole game or video would just freeze I would have to restart my pc to get it going

 

Freezing when exiting game

Hi all

Like the title says, i freeze when exiting 3d games. I have set my AtiTool to underclock my x1600 mobility during 2d mode and upon 3d games automatically run the maximum clock speeds. However i found that when i exit the game the graphics card is sometimes unable to readjust itself back into 2d mode clocks. My theory is that the change in clock speeds is too abrupt for the video card to handle, since i can run in 2d mode with the clocks just fine and stable.

Might i suggest that AtiTool bring up an option for setting clock speeds more gently/ slower for great changes in clocks.

PS I am running on my Asus A6J with
default clock speeds (3d game mode) of 455 Mhz core and 355 Mhz mem
2d mode clocks 125 Mhz core and 125 Mhz mem

 

Computer freezes after exiting games

Hi! Starting from about a month ago, my newish (3 month old) PC starts freezing after I close a game. I've also made it happen by running a 3DMark benchmark, but that app cycles through multiple benchmarks, so it could be the same effect.

The freeze happens a few seconds (1-30s) after exiting the game and is occasionally followed by a BSOD (error code: CLOCK_WATCHDOG_TIMEOUT), which is itself frozen (it never goes past 0% when collecting files, even after hours). If I power cycle the PC right after a freeze, it often freezes a few seconds after starting windows as well, but if I wait for it to "cool down" for a few hours, I can use it normally (including playing heavy games for an extended amount of time).

Here's what I've tried so far:

• Ran SFC /scannow. It found and fixed a few things (looking at the logs, it was faulty BT drivers), but no change
  
• Tried a few GPU-related things that I found around the web, including reverting to older drivers, changing power settings, etc.
  
• Tried running games in borderless instead of fullscreen
  
• Eventually, I replaced the GPU entirely. The issue occurred again with the other GPU (and didn't repro on the other computer I put my old card in), so it's probably not a hardware issue in the GPU
  
• Ran Memtest86 now, no error found
  
• I have a dual screen setup, going through a KVM. Simplified all that by plugging it directly on a single screen, no change
  
• Updated the BIOS
  
• Updated MB chipset firmware, updated other drivers through Windows Update
  
• Swapped the PSU
  
• Monitored the temperature of all components while the crash happens. Nothing seems out of the ordinary.
  
• Tried to get a dump or minidump, but the freeze prevents Windows from writing it to disk, it seems.
  

I'm starting to run out of ideas, so if anyone recognizes this pattern or can suggest diagnostic steps, that would be really appreciated!
