Windows 10: PC keeps suddenly going to 100 disk each month

My computer keeps suddenly jumping to 100% disk usage each month, causing it to run ridiculously slow. I constantly have to fix it through trying to update a ton of drivers or download windows 10 updates, and I run chkdsk and check for corrupted system files and run full virus scans, but the issue always returns within a month. Is there something I'm missing? I've been cleaning out all the files I don't need and using defrag where I can. I shouldn't have malware, as I haven't had any viruses flagged nor have I installed anything from suspicious websites. Hoping for a simple fix to this problem, as I use my computer for a lot of stuff. Btw I have a hard drive, not an SSD.

Disk Usage at 100% with nothing running

My PC is running Windows 10 with the latest updates but has suddenly become unusable with disk usage staying at 100% even with nothing running and just the same processes listed in Task Manager as before the problems
started. I've tried a few suggestions found in online forums - disabling Windows Search and Superfetch, adjusting page file size, etc. but nothing has done the trick yet. I don't have any outside anti-virus software installed. I read about the potential MSI
issue but don't have IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers listed in the Device Manager. Finally, it seems to boot up normally and will have periods where the disk usage drops and it's usable but those moments are brief and it inevitably goes back up to 100% usage.

I've seen that article. and I am in fact not running that driver. I followed the steps and it does not appear in the list.

 

Disk 100% busy, System Unusable

• Windows 10 Education Ed, version 1709
• 1 x SSD boot disk
• Storage Space Device of 2 x 2TB disks mirrored

This is a recent change in behaviour, new in the last 1-3 months I would guess. My Storage Space Device frequently goes to 100% busy, rendering my system more or less inoperable. Any process / event that touches the Storage Space Device results in this behaviour.
I don't see anything relevant in the Event Viewer.

I've tried many of the online suggestions such as disabling search and SuperFetch but that has not helped.

Just now I was trying to update a route in Garmin Basecamp. When I initiated the route recalculation, the Storage Space Device went to 100% busy and stayed there for 10 - 15 minutes or so with the route recalculation showing now progress. Then disk activity
suddenly went to zero and the route recalculation completed in what I would consider a "normal" amount of time.

Last week I was trying to copy music files between my NAS and my desktop, but had the same problems.
