Windows 10: PC volume controls stopped working after Windows 10 update

I am working on a Surface Pro Tablet. I just updated windows. Now, when I am listening to any media, the sound controls do not work at all. Symptoms below:


1 Plugged into PC speakers I have not tried headphones no sound comes out of the speakers but comes directly from the tablet.

2 I turn the sound all the way down to off using the buttons on the tablet but I still have sound coming from the tablet. I can only adjust the volume in the media app that is currently running. I have to turn the sound down on any media app ie. youtube, twitter... individually.


Everything worked fine before I updated this morning.

The issue with volume control could have happened due to the corrupted or outdated driver. To resolve your issue, we suggest that you follow the 2 methods below:

Method 1: Run the Audio Troubleshooter on the system.



Windows 10 has a built-in troubleshooter to check and fix issues with Sound. We would suggest you run this troubleshooter to check if the issue is with your Audio



Refer these steps:

• Press Windows key+X, select Control panel.
• Change the view as an option on the top right to Large icons.
• Click on troubleshooting and click on the view all option on the left panel
• Run the playing Audio troubleshooter

Method 2. Uninstall and reinstall the latest drivers from the manufacturer website.

Follow the steps to update the audio drivers:

• Press Windows key + X key and click Device Manager.
• Expand the Sound, Video and game controllers.
• Right-click on the Sound card and click on Uninstall.
• Install the latest audio driver from the manufacturer website.

Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

• Open a new Explorer window.
• Click View in the ribbon.
• Click Options.
• Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
• Click OK
