Windows 10: PC Won't boot; Error code: 0xc0000185

Error code: 0xc0000185


My Windows PC won't boot after restarting for an update.


I don't have a physical backup or recovery disk, every time I turn on my computer I get a BSoD saying it's unable to boot after preparing for an automatic repair


Pressing F8 to go into Startup Settings flashes the screen to black for about half a second before returning to the BSoD.

This also happens when pressing Enter to try again.


I can go into the UEFI Firmware settings but I don't know how to use it to fix my PC.


Please help me recover my files

Error code 0xc0000185 can be caused by damaged or corrupted startup files or errors on the hard disk. Did the issue happen while updating your Windows 10 device?

Pressing Enter will instruct Windows to automatically fix the boot problem. Should the issue continue, you can use a Windows 10 installation media as stated in your screenshot. You can create one using the
Media Creation Tool installed on a different machine.

• Have you made any changes to the operating system prior to this issue?
• Are you able to boot the device to desktop with this error message?
