    PDF Thumbnails Do Not Show in Windows


    Hi there. I have installed and used Adobe PDF, PDF X, FoxIt PDF, and PDFGear as PDF readers. Most recently - Adobe PDF, PDF X, and PDF FoxIt were not showing PDF thumbnails in Microsoft Windows 11. In "Files and Folders" - "Always show icons, never thumbnails" is Unchecked and applied. Cleared the thumbnail cache using Disk Cleanup. Most recently installed PDFGear and was happy to see PDF thumbnails restored. Downloaded three PDF files this morning, and those three new files do not show PDF thumbnails. Cleared the thumbnail cache using Disk Cleanup again, and now all PDF files saved do not sho

    File Explorer - Some PDF's show thumbnail image, some don’t

    In Windows 10 File Explorer, I see thumbnails for a few of my pdf files but still see the generic Adobe pdf icon for most of them.

    • In Windows 10 folder options, the checkbox for “Always show icons, never thumbnails” is unchecked.
    • On the Adobe Reader preferences general tab, “Enable PDF thumbnails previews in Windows Explorer” is checked.
    • Adobe Acrobat is set as my default PDF viewer.
    • I have used Disk Cleanup to delete all my thumbnails to clear and rebuild the cache, yet the problem persists.
    Any suggestions on how I can see all the pdf icons as thumbnails?
    Windows 10 Pro, Version 1903, Build 18362.657
    Adobe Acrobat Reader DC (20.006.20034)

    I asked over in the Adobe Acrobat Reader forum a few days ago but have received no replies.

    PDF thumbnail view

    Setting Adobe Viewer as the default viewer for PDFs fixes this issue. OTOH, if you want to retain Edge as the default PDF viewer, you need to use Adobe's thumbnail module. Run the registry fix pdf_thumbnail_adobe.reg in this article. That should do the trick.

    Once done, do the following if required.

    • Log off and log back into your account, or restart the Explorer shell via Task Manager.
    • Clear the thumbnail cache using Disk Cleanup.

    Windows 10's windows explorer does not show PDF thumbnails, only the PDF icon.... Checked all of my icon/thumbnail settings all are set to show thumbnails not icons ….. 95% of my work is with PDF's please fix or inform how to switch back to 8.1 …... NO PDF
    THUMBNAILS IS HURTING MY BUSINESS....
