PDF Viewer program suddenly fails in Win 10

    Win 10 Pro 14393.rsi

I'm very fond of PDFviewer by Tracker Software. Even though it is no longer in development it can be downloaded from
    https://www.tracker-software.com/pro...s/discontinued
It's free for private use and has many virtues, like a good OCR. Suddenly, today, windows refuses to open a pdf file with the program. The default is set correctly but dbl clicking on a filename results in "Access Denied" popup and "Open With" has no effect. However, the program will run from a shortcut and I can drag a file into it successfully. I hope this is just a glitch in the current version of Windows. If you know of a way around this I'd like to hear it.

    :)

  2. How do I get my Internet Browser to stop opening downloads in the Edge Browser???

Yes! Do I have to download a pdf viewer program? Even if I do that, it doesn't give me the choice to open with other programs. I just realized...I have Office 365, I just haven't worked with many of the other programs in it besides Word. Shouldn't it have
a pdf viewer program included? And if so, shouldn't it then give me the choice to open with another program?

Anyway, if I need a pdf viewer program, do you have a link for a safe one? Thanks for your help!

  3. How to open a PDF file via a web link?

Just got a WP8 Nokia Lumia 920 and I'm having issues viewing PDF files via web links.
I installed the Microsoft PDF viewer and it seems to work fine. If a PDF file is on the device and I open it, the MS PDF viewer works fine. If I'm at a website and click on a link that points to a PDF file the MS PDF viewers opens but immediately says:
    "Error, unable to open document".

    Here's a link that fails: http://www.nxp.com/documents/data_sheet/LPC2468.pdf

Its like the MS pdf reader wants the PDF file in its "library" area and won't open a file out of that area. IE must be sticking the pdf file in a temp directory somewhere the MS pdf viewer can't find.

Is this a setup problem on my end? Does this work for anyone else?

    Thanks!

Then download something else like Fox-it.

Can't see why the URL says discontinued but maybe the title was changed. The page shows that PDF-XChange Viewer was updated just a few days ago. The description also says it was replaced by PDF-XChange Editor which is not free. Guess they just want money.

What other answer did you expect? Companies have to make money and also do not have the time or money to keep supporting something that no longer meets today's standards. The business world dictates how the PDF readers are created.

Nuance is the worse when it comes to selling you a license and then when your machine goes tit's up, they want you to purchase another license if you are not able to get to your image of the drive or the backup goes South.

Well, my question was not about Nuance, and Tracker Software still offers the product. I did email Tracker with a copy of my post, but I don't think it's Tracker's fault. I believe it's a quirk with Windows and was hoping someone might recognize it. I'm aware that there are other competent PDF readers out there, but, like old dog Trey, I've grown attached to it.

And I suggested to use Fox-it if you do not want to use Adobe. My last remark was an example about what these companies are doing, it was not a suggestion. Tracker is looking at the fact that they cannot keep handing out free software for life, along with it has nothing to do with Microsoft. Too many jump on Microsoft for every little thing that happens.

It's working fine for me. I also updated it on September 13th (build 2.5.318.0)
    Windows 10 x64 14393.187

Have you tried uninstalling it with any uninstaller tool and reinstalling it from scratch?. The only issue I have under w10 is that I have to manually set it as default PDF viewer by extension.

I love this PDF reader. It's slim. It allows to save PDF as bitmap, you can do some basic writing on PDFs and you can even copy/paste bitmaps into them (nice for adding signatures for instance). There is also an OCR option that works quite well for text.

I would also recommend Foxit. I would also say that if you're using a software that is not performing as expected then find another.

Thanks, all! I just found that Tracker's PDF Editor has a free version, which I downloaded and installed. Works great and I am a happy camper once again. I also downloaded Foxit and will try it out.

  12. Hi all,

I work for Tracker Software as the Tech. Support Manager for North America - @tcebob, I saw the link to this post in your email and thought I'd pitch in (will also answer your email directly, too) ;-)

You are correct; the Viewer has been discontinued and replaced by the Editor, but this wasn't an attempt at a 'money grab' - originally, the Editor was called Viewer V3.0, as it was intended to be the next release of the Viewer and the first product that we offered that supported direct content editing. We felt that having a product called The PDF-XChange Viewer able to directly edit base content, did not accurately reflect the greatly extended functionality that was now on offer, so it was renamed to the Editor and sold as the replacement for the Viewer. Users with active maintenance (maintenance guaranteeing access to upgrades and updates, with 1 year free with every new license) on their Viewer license would have automatically been issued a new and valid license for Version 3 of the Editor, as a gesture of good will and to assure clients that it wasn't about taking their money, but simply about rebranding the product.

The Editor can do everything that the Viewer can and much, much more (content editing, redaction, add headers and footers, add watermarks, for field creation/editing, barcode addtion, slitting & resizing pages, document optimization, creation of PDF/A compliant documents, etc., etc.). Everything that the Viewer offered for free, the Editor also offers, as well as the ability to directly edit base content text (text that isn't added as an annotation).

However, there was obviously a cut-off period and would couldn't continually give out free upgrades to everyone, constantly; Tracker's staff have to be able to feed their families! ;-)

With regards to Viewer support: The Viewer is not officially supported, but bugs that we deem critical may still be fixed (i.e. critical security updates). Eventually, these will also stop. If it's still an issue for you, then I will respond directly to the main point of the OP in this thread, via the email that was sent directly to us. I cannot necessarily guarantee any fix for the Viewer though, I'm afraid. We do recommend that all clients use the Editor.

    Thanks!
