Performance issues after an upgrade due to System process

I am posting this in case it helps anyone else out there that has the same problem as I did. I actually found a lot of places online that were addressing similar issues but all of them panned out except that some of them gave me ideas on how to troubleshoot my problem. This discussion thread may help you out.

Anyhow, I have an HP Pavilion Laptop AMD CPU that I bought with Win 7, then upgraded to 8, then 10 after a great deal of trouble. It seems that pretty much all the times I need to upgrade to a new version of W10, I have problems. Anyhow, last week, after delaying as long as I dared, I finally upgraded to W10 version 1909... and after a while figuring out how to get this done, I was successful, but the system was very slow. Looking at Task Manager, I determined that the culprit was the System Process which was hogging about 20% of the CPU, and making it very annoying do do anything... even moving the mouse around was a challenge to one's patience. I contacted Microsoft and received a very terse response: update your drivers, and if that does not work, reinstall W10 with a clean install. I tried that and it did not work, and they couold not help me determine which driver or sub-process was the culprit. After quite a bit of further digging, I found a program called "Process Explorer", which Microsoft should incorporate into the Task Manager platform. PE was able to show me that the System sub-process that was causing the problem was called Atikmdag.sys, which I easily found on my system; it part of the driver set by Advanced Micro Device Inc. Radeon and is used to control the screen. I disabled the driver and after a flicker on my screen, the system came back and is now working fine.

Btw, if there was any other driver in there that was the problem, I could have found it easily as well. If anyone from Microsoft reads this, please ensure that this tool is brought into the standard troubleshooting toolbox and that your support advisors point your users to it rather than trying to convince people to reimage their systems... in my case, this would have made no difference whatsoever.

Hopefully this helps someone out there.

    :)
