Permanent Drive Letter Per Individual Drive

I have a 'number' of USB/flash/stick/thumb drives, and a 'number' of External Hard Drives (EHD) connected via USB ports which I use with my Dell XPS 8700 desktop. Is it possible to lock (not changeable) a particular drive letter with each specific drive? For example, I have a thumb drive that I want to be recognized as Drive G: whenever I attach it to my computer. When Drive G: is not connected to my computer, I do not want any other drive to be recognized as Drive G:. I do not have enough USB ports for all the thumb drives and EHDs that I own. I use them primarily for backups. The programs that I use are set up to go to a particular drive for the backup. If another drive is using the specified drive letter, the backup will not be accomplished. Drive G is always, and only, Drive G:, Drive H is always, and only, Drive H:, etc.

If there is another means to accomplish the same goal, I am all ears.

    Thank you.

    :)

  2. Permanent Drive Letters

I want to assign a drive letter to a back up disc that WON'T change. I want to assign it and then have that letter as permanent for that drive.

    How do I do this?

It use to be easy, now it seems impossible.

    I would appreciate the help.

    Thanks

help. USB drive isn't assigned a drive letter.

Any usb flash drive I plug into my computer isn't assigned a drive letter. The physical drive shows in the "safely remove hardware" but it doesnt show up in disk management. I have tried to populate the volume thru the safely remove hardware properties window and it does pop up in the list but it doesn't stay there. This isn't a format or assign a letter problem. It's more complicated then that. Maybe one of the services needed for usb drive management was disabled? Suggestions needed. btw external usb harddrives work fine.

    Permanent Drive Letters

    Karen,

I have no idea what you are talking about. Permanent drive letters can still be assigned in Disk management. Have you looked there yet?
