  1. Permissions to open a particular folder

I have a Dell Windows 11 laptop. I placed a folder on the C drive approximately 2 years ago and did not have any trouble accessing it until a short time ago.The laptop is divided into 2 users. My girlfriend's login and myself as Administrator. When I double click the folder a message pops up that I do not have the permissions to open it. I have tried Powershell commands, Safe mode, to no avail. Also, right clicking on the folder and trying to set my permissions on the Security tab of Permissions It says I do not have permission to do that. I also disabled the Virus protection/Folder Con

  3. Assign Permissions for particular application

    Hello Donna,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

Suggest you to try the below mentioned troubleshooting steps and check if they help.

    • Go to the folder where that application or program files are located or installed. (I.e. C:\Program Files or
      Program Files(x86)\...).
Say for example if I want to give full permission to the Internet explorer, then the navigation path will be
C:\Program Files, there i want to right-click on the Internet Explorer folder
      to go into properties.

    • Accordingly Right-clicking
on the particular application folder and select
      Properties from context menu.

    • Go to the Security tab and click
      Advanced.

    • Now click Change permissions. If it is not there, just continue with next step.

    • Click Add, then click
Select a principal under Permission Entry Folder window. This will brings up
      Select User or Group window.

    • There enter the name of the User Profile under
Enter the object name to select, for which you require or assign permission. Next click
Check Names. Once name appears in the field, click OK.

    • Check all boxes under
      Basic permission
:, also select the check box Only apply these permissions to objects and/or containers within this container, then click
      OK

  4. Permissions to open a particular folder

    No permissions

    Hi,

I would suggest you to right click on the user's folder for your profile and check if the permissions shows as "read only'. If this is the case, it might be causing the issue. In this case, I would suggest you to go to C:\User folder, right click on the
folder with your username and follow these steps:

    • Open the properties of the main user profile folder where the files are located (such as Documents, Pictures, etc).
    • Go to the Security tab and click Advanced.
    • Check the box at the bottom of this window. It is labeled "Replace all child object permissions with inheritable permissions from this object" and then click Ok.
This does a one-time action that replaces the security on all the files/subfolders. It’s one-time, so you won’t find that box checked if you peek at it later. Try these steps and let us know the results for further assistance.
