    Permissions

Recently I received a message from Windows 10 saying that there was an update for Java, and to click to install, so I clicked it and it came up with some permission error, so I manually went to the temp folder and installed it with privs and everything was fine. But every time there is a Java update I have this issue.

Now another software (Daemon Tools Lite) has an available update, same thing again, the app doesn't have privs so I have to go to the AppData\Local\Temp and run it manually.

Why is this happening? The permissions look fine to me, although, I have noticed that the AppData folders always have 'read only' ticked, even when I untick the box, it looks like it's doing it's business, but then reverts back to a ticked box again.

    Any ideas?

    :)

Don't have permissions to change permissions

    Hi Mady,

There are two kinds of administrator on the computer, first is the administrator user created during the Windows installation using a local account or Microsoft account. It has complete access to the computer and can make desired changes
unless the activity requires elevated rights. Second is the Built-in hidden Administrator which is a local account that has a full unrestricted access rights to the computer.

You can still access restricted files, apps, and program by right clicking on it and selecting
Run as administrator on the menu.

If anything comes up, don't hesitate to get back to us anytime.

Running the app with admin works, is this how it's supposed to be? Should it not prompt me?

    Hello Mike,

The program seems to require elevated rights to run properly, so it looks like you'll need to "Run as admin" it.

In an ideal world, the program developer would have the program give you a UAC prompt when opened to get elevated rights instead of you having to manually do so. I would recommend to contact the software developers, and let them know what's happening. They should be able to get that sorted in a future release.

I guess because it happened with Java too that I assumed it was an issue with Windows. Devs must be getting lazy *Sad

No hang on, something definitely isn't right, because the Java updater is actually called BY Windows, the notification comes up in the bottom right corner, some kind of new alert thing in Windows 10. So clicking on it surely Windows would know to prompt UAC. It's as if I need to run Windows itself in admin mode.

Nar, it's the program that would need to request it from UAC.
