Windows 10: Phil Spencer: Cloud Gaming Not Replacing Traditional Consoles Just Yet

Phil Spencer, head of Xbox, has plenty to think about, from the next generation of Xbox consoles to helping build new development teams. He and the team are also managing an ecosystem that's trying to serve the needs of as many players as possible. Cloud-based gaming touches all of those areas, which is why he's been championing Project xCloud, Microsoft's game streaming technology that will let you access the power of an Xbox console through your phone via an internet connection. We recently got the opportunity to talk to the head of Xbox about a number of topics, including how he sees xCloud fitting into Xbox's repertoire, and within an industry that's traditionally orbited around consoles in the home.

"It's one of the directions the industry is headed. To me, it's about what you as a gamer want to do, and I'm not trying to tell you that owning a box that plays video games is a bad thing or that somehow that's not needed." Spencer continued, "I think that the cloud inevitability as part of gaming is absolutely true. But we have more compute devices around us than we've ever had, whether it's your phone, a Surface Hub, or an Xbox. The world where compute devices are gone and it's all coming from the cloud just isn't the world that we live in today."

Phil Spencer Shares His Vision for Future of Xbox - Project Scorpio

Earlier today, at the Xbox E3 2016 Briefing, Head of Xbox Phil Spencer took the stage to share the vision for the future of Xbox. Spencer shared that the team sees a future full of choice, without being constrained by technical boundaries, devices people play on, or console generations.

With so many people playing games on more than one device, there’s a fundamental shift in the way the world thinks about gaming.

In a post penned by Spencer over at Xbox Wire, he shares some of Team Xbox’s core beliefs. From the post:

At Xbox, we believe you should have a diverse and expansive library of games. That’s why, in addition to the many exciting games we announced today for Xbox One and Windows 10, we unveiled the new Xbox Play Anywhere program that will enable you to buy a game once and play it on both the Xbox One and your Windows 10 PC. We believe in uniting gaming communities where you can play, compete and connect with friends, wherever they are. Today, we showed how Xbox Live is being made available for developers to use across Xbox, Windows 10, VR and mobile, as well as across other participating networks. We believe in Gaming for Everyone, and we feel strongly that all gamers deserve to be welcomed, respected and supported. With that as one of our driving forces, today we announced new Xbox Live features to help you build out your gaming network and play your way. We believe in hardware innovation without sacrificing compatibility. The first step on that journey of innovation was today’s announcement of the Xbox One S, the newest addition to the Xbox One family. We shared that our existing Xbox One games and accessories will continue to work with it.

Phil Spencer talks Microsoft's new studios and commitment to PC gaming

Microsoft is on a video game spending spree. In the past year it’s bought six studios, including Forza Horizon studio Playground Games and Hellblade developer Ninja Theory, and founded a new one. For PC gamers, the two most striking acquisitions are Obsidian and inXile. Both are synonymous with PC gaming—Obsidian’s founders are the same developers that made classic RPGs Planescape: Torment and Fallout 2, while inXile’s CEO Brian Fargo co-designed Wasteland.

Microsoft hasn't done PC gaming well over the past decade. No one liked Games For Windows Live, its last aborted Xbox-on-PC platform, and Microsoft's own games are today all sold through the Microsoft Store, which is still a pain to use nearly four years into the life of Windows 10. But it has been getting better, and the decision to buy two leading PC developers suggests the company is taking PC gaming more seriously than ever...
