    Link to MS Photos required.

Windows Photos Viewer is an oddity; as I suggested, find a free downloadable image viewer you like, and use that.

One random list: (there are many such)
18 Best Free Image Viewer Software

I use a program in building my family tree- it lets me use an external viewer- simply whatever is set as default. Here you can see it displays the image in Photoviewer. I imagine Vuescanner requires you to specify the path literally.

  3. Phone Link: Which Ports are required?

Hello! My name is Mostafa, and I’m an independent advisor and a long-time Microsoft user.

I’m sorry that you are experiencing this issue, and I will try my best to assist you with this so that you find a satisfactory solution.

Microsoft Phone Link requires that both your phone and your PC are connected to the same Wi-Fi network. It does not require any specific TCP/UDP ports to be open on your router. If your PC and mobile phone are sometimes on different network segments, you may experience issues with Phone Link connectivity. If you’re using a Wi-Fi router that’s connected to the LAN with NAT, you can attempt to use port forwarding on your Wi-Fi router.

I would suggest checking your router's settings and verifying that traffic on these ports is allowed through any firewalls or security settings. You can also try temporarily disabling any firewalls or security settings to see if they are causing the issue.

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/phone...

I hope the above steps helped you. In case of additional questions, reach out back to me, and I will be happy to help and try my best to resolve your issue. Thank you.

    Best,

    Mostafa

    Ridiculous installation requirement

@whs, what you have experienced is due Two-Step verification which you have turned on. It is of course up to you alone if you decide to use this added security feature or turn it off. This screenshot from MS account's security options page:

More: Microsoft Account "Two-step Verification" - Turn On or Off.

In my case, I have Two-Step verification on with a secondary email address, a mobile phone number and the Microsoft Authenticator app installed on my Windows phone. In my case when installing Windows and using an MS Account for initial sign in I will get this:

Phone Link app requirements and setup code is longer than required 9966d1485949174t-ridiculous-installation-requirement-2015-01-02_15h40_11.png

If I have no access to my Windows Phone or for another reason want to use an alternative method, I can select phone or email:

Conclusion: You will only be asked the security code sent by email if you have set up the Two-Step verification feature and email is the only option (you will not use the Authenticator app nor have you given a phone number in your MS Account security settings).
