Windows 10: Phone Number Associated With Another Account

PREFACE: The number is not on another account. Also posting for my boyfriend and his account due to him spending hours with support just to get no whereOk, so when I try to put my phone number in my account it says it's associated with another account but when I go to log in with the phone number to see what account it is, it logs me into my normal account but still says I have no associated number. I need help from microsofts end but can't reach anyone that is able to help other than posting here and hoping. This is the worst experience I have ever had with microsoft and is probably the reaso

Phone number is one of your security info, which is only used to verify your identity if you're accessing sensitive personal information or if we detect a problem with your account.
To change the phone number associated with your Microsoft account, we recommend to follow the steps below:

• First, go to the
  Security basics page and sign in with your Microsoft account.
• Select Update info.
• Select Add security info. then follow the instructions to enter your email or phone number.
• We'll send a security code to that new email or phone number. Enter that security code, and press
  Next. Your new security info will appear in you list.

My Microsoft profile phone number

When I logged into Microsoft it asked whether to send a code to my email address or to my phone. The phone number is not my current phone. I have seen multiple postings asking the same question. "How do I change the phone number associated with my account",
but I have yet to see an answer.

Can someone provide a straightforward list of steps to do this?

Hi Vanessa regarding this post I need to use my phone number to change my phone number my last two numbers are the same that the Mc account has but when I go and type the last four digits its no good, I've tried use near digit typos in the numbpad but still,
is there anything I can do to change my phone number in any other way so i'll be enabled to actually authenticate with my phone
