Windows 10: Photo app closing after "too many photos" open?

Hey, I recently purchased a high-powered laptop (Alienware 17) and I'm having problems with the photos app just choosing to close ALL of my photos I have open when I seem to reach some sort of peak capacity. The problem with this is that it really isn't that many photos that I have open (i.e. 20 or 30). My old Acer Aspire running Windows 7 wasn't nearly as high-powered and could open at least 100 without any problem. This laptop I have now running Windows 10 is 100x more powerful, has quadruple the ram, quadruple the hard drive, a faster processor, a high-powered graphics card and is made to run system-intensive video games.....but it somehow can't handle simple photos? It seems as if Windows 10 has some sort of "memory peak" that it allocates to my photo viewer app before it automatically shuts it off. Does anybody know how I can fix this?

Photos are opening with Paint instead of Photos app

Hello,

It's likely that your default application for opening photos is Paint. To change your default program in Windows 10 from
Paint to the Photo app, we suggest that you perform the following steps:

• On the Start menu, select Settings.
  
• Go to System, then go to Default apps.
  
• Select Photos or any app that you like to be the default under
  Photo viewer.

Unable to open the photos in Photos App

• Are you trying to open the photos in Photo App?
• Are you getting any error messages when you try to open the photos?
• Do you have the copy of those photos and are you able to open those photos?

Open with another app 'photos'


When you choose photos and select 'open with' it gives a selection of apps. In the list I see the apps but one that looks odd is labelled %1 and has a generic app icon. It's almost as if it's some kind of old or broken program that doesn't exist. All the other programs like paint and photos are in the list as they should be but this is a rogue one. Does anyone else see this?
