Windows 10: Photos app not displaying photos or options when selecting from explorer

When selecting a photo either double click or right click+open, the photos app is almost entirely blank showing only its background theme color.Photos app is working as I can open it manually and find photos in directories from within the app. I can also right click and edit with photos from explorer and finally can right click the icon in the taskbar and select from "previously open" images and it will work.See screenshots below;https://imgur.com/a/kxXZYBf- I have uninstalled photos several times and reinstalled it via the store- I have updated my windows software-

Unable to replace Photos app with Photo Viewer as default (10240).

Right there in my first bullet point: "Windows Photo Viewer is never listed as an option when using "Open with".

That would work if Windows Photo Viewer were in the list but it is not.

For everyone's convenience, here's what I wrote on answers.microsoft.com:

1. If I right-click a photo and choose "Open with", Windows Photo Viewer is *not listed* (only Paint and Photos).
2. I select "Choose another app" followed by "More apps" it is still *not listed*.
3. If I continue and select "Look for another app on this PC", I can navigate to "C:\Program Files\Windows Photo Viewer". However it contains only one program called "ImagingDevices" and it is *not* an image viewer.
4. If I display "All files" instead of just "Programs" I can see "PhotoViewer.dll". However, selecting this item results in an error message indicating it cannot be used for displaying photos.

 

Photos are opening with Paint instead of Photos app

Hello,

It's likely that your default application for opening photos is Paint. To change your default program in Windows 10 from
Paint to the Photo app, we suggest that you perform the following steps:

• On the Start menu, select Settings.
  
• Go to System, then go to Default apps.
  
• Select Photos or any app that you like to be the default under
  Photo viewer.

File Explorer Crashes and unable to access Photo App

I understand the inconvenience caused to you while accessing the photos from Photo App, we will help you with this issue.

I suggest you to copy the photos files to a different location and try to upload it as a profile picture on Outlook account and check if you are able to do it.

If the issue still persist, suggest you to troubleshoot the Photo App.

Method 1:

I suggest you to run the Windows Store Apps troubleshooter.

Follow the below steps:

• Type troubleshooting in the search bar.
• Select Troubleshooting.
• Select View all on the top left corner.
• Click on Windows Store Apps.
• Select “Advance” and click on “Run as Administrator”.
• 
  Click “Next” and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the troubleshooting process.
  

If the issue persists then follow the below method:

Method 2: I would recommend you to uninstall the Photo app
using Windows PowerShell command and reinstall using the Windows store. Follow the below steps.

• 
  Open the Start menu, type Windows PowerShell in
  the search bar.
  
• 
  Right click on the Windows PowerShell and select Run as administrator.
  
• 
  Enter the below command to uninstall the Photo app.
  

• get-appxpackage *Microsoft.Windows.Photos* | remove-appxpackage

After performing the above steps, install the Photo app from the Windows store.
