  1. Photos App not picking up any files that have been compressed on the file system

I have been reporting this issue since the launch of the new Photos App see https://aka.ms/AAnli2d and https://aka.ms/AApdm32 and then found the root cause for it around 2 months back and reported this specifically through Feedback Hub https://aka.ms/AApdxzi, but still Microsoft have not fixed it!The issue is that, if you have any photos that are set to be compressed in NTFS properties / advanced / compress contents either directly or because they are in a folder which has had compression set to on for the folder, then the new Photos App will simply ignore the files! But it does so wi

    Compress files??

It all depends on the contents. Back in the early days of DVD games, they had plenty of space compared to CD's. So they left stuff uncompressed on the DVD itself. Compressing such ISO image would result in very high compression ratio. But these days, even DVD discs are becoming small and game companies are already using data compression to fit more data on the same DVD. And since you cannot compress already compressed data, you're seeing more and more of the 99% compresion ratio moments.

Good examples of such scenarios is when you want to compres uncompressed WAV file and a MP3 file. WAV is not compressed and you can decrease its size significantly. You might gain few kilobytes when trying to compress already compressed MP3. The same is with images. You can compress BMP images rather well but when compressing JPG images, you won't really gain anything as its already compressed.

There are few very specialized algorithms that may gain some more compression out of already compressed data, but the gains are usually very small and usually not worth the extra compression time needed to perform the compression itself. Plus you can only use them to compress very specific data files.

    Hi Don,

We would like to ask some questions to better assist you with this issue.

    • What is the build and version of your Windows 10?
    • Did you receive any error messages/codes when you tried accessing your photo files?
    • Are you trying to access your photos through File Explorer or Photo app?
    • Did you make any changes prior to the issue?
Also, we suggest that you use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted files. System File Checker is a utility in Windows that allows users to scan for corruptions in Windows system files and restore corrupted files. You may visit this
    article for the steps.

    We'll wait for your reply.

    Regards.
