  2. Error 0x000000cb / The system could not find the environment option that was entered

We have a user running Windows 11 Pro who is having trouble printing on any physical printer (things like Adobe PDF creator work fine). His system detects the printers as normal, but actually trying to print always gives the Windows error 0x000000cb with the error message “The system could not find the environment option that was entered.” This appears to be a problem with a missing environment variable.

    Things I’ve tried:

    • Windows printer troubleshooter
    • Reinstalling printer drivers
    • Starting/stopping the print spooler service
    • Ensuring the windir environment variable is set correctly
    • Running Windows’ SFC system file repair tool
    • Booting in safe mode & running SFC in safe mode
    • Reinstalled C++ packages and other requirements for our printing setup
    • A few registry edits suggested online

The user does not have a system restore point set to back up from, and I am trying to avoid having to do a full system reset. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

    System environment variable won't stick

Running Win10 Home on an Acer Spin 3, 64bit, i7cpu. I try to add a path to the system environment variables by:

    1. Control Panel > System > Advanced system settings > Advanced tab > Environment variables

    2. The "Environment Variables" window opens.
    3. In the "System Variables" pane I select "Path" and click the EDIT button.
    4. A list of the current system paths is displayed.
    5. I click the NEW button, browse to the path I want to add which is "C:\Python36-32" and click OK. The path "C:\Python36-32" is added to the list of current system paths.
    6. I click OK and am returned to the "Environment Variables" window.
    7. I click the "X" at the top right to close the "Environment Variables" window.

Now if I click the "Environment Variables" button again (end of step-1) and repeat steps 2-4, the new path I added in step-5 is gone. IOW, adding a new path won't stick.

    What am I doing wrong?

"Class not registered" error message on opening a photo in Microsoft Photos on Windows 10.

    Hello Tracy,

Thank you for posting on Microsoft Community. We regret the inconvenience caused and will assist you in resolving the issue.

Before assisting further, I would like to ask you few questions:

    • When you say “Microsoft Photos”, are you referring to Photo app?

    • Does the issue persists only on trying to open a particular photo or on any photo in Photo app?

    • Dis the issue started occurring recently or has it been the same since upgrading to Windows 10?

    • Are you able to open the pictures using other Photo viewing applications?

    • Which is the default application set to view photos on your PC?

If the issue is specific to a photo showing the above error message on launching the same in
Photo app, I suggest you to check if the picture opens without any issues on other photo viewing applications.

Method 1: If the issue does not persists, I suggest you to run
Windows apps troubleshooter to check if the any
of the app files and folders are missing or corrupted on the PC.

Running the troubleshooter will help in detecting and identifying the issue and in certain cases will fix the same to enhance the performance of the system.

In many cases, the Windows Store will automatically notify you if there’s a problem with an app and try to fix the problem. If you continue experiencing problems with an app, this tool can automatically identify and fix some problems
    with apps and the Store.

Method 2: If the issue persists, I suggest you to check if the default photo viewer application is set appropriately in the system settings by following the steps below:

    • Press Windows logo key on the keyboard, type
Default programs and select the top most search result.

    • From the right side panel, check if the desired application to view the photo is set as default under
Photo viewer option. If not, click on the tile and select the application from the
      Choose an application window.

    • Close the window, open the photo and check if the changes are effective.

Write to us with the answers to the above questions and the status of the issue on the same post for further assistance. Your reply is most important for us to ensure we assist you accordingly.

    Thank you.
