Windows 10: Photoshop immediately closing down after loading .cr2 files to canvas

I’ll go through them in raw, select the ones I want to take into photoshop proper and hit open. They load as they always have, then once the last one loads photoshop immediately starts closing, one file at a time. Can’t seem to abort this shut down and the only work around I seem to have worked out is opening batches of files, I can open all of my files if I open them in batches rather than all at once. Using a brand new desktop, running win 10, 8gb ram. Not clued you enough in IT to know where to look for the issue. As far as I can tell everything’s up to date. Anyone able to help at all?

.CR2 raw files not opening

Hi,

We may open .cr2 files using the Photo file. We need additional information to help resolve your concern. Are you getting any error message when opening a .cr2 file format? If yes, we recommend setting a default program to open the file. Follow the steps below:

• Open Settings.
  
• Click Apps.
  
• Click Default apps.
  
• Click Choose default apps by file type.
  
• Locate .cr2, then select Photos as the default app.

Trouble with Canon CR2 RAW files

Hi there

just curious but why would a camera firmware update making ANY DIFFERENCE AT ALL to existing .cr2 files being handled (or not handled as the case may be) by Windows. I can't even understand why it would make any difference to NEW .CR2 files either - but you can have the benefit of the doubt on that - it certainly shouldn't make ANY difference to EXISTING .CR2's.

.CR2 files all work fine for my cameras on W10 - although I use Photoshop for processing. Things like Photoshop elements will handle .CR2 files as well if you don't want full blown photoshop.

For those who use GIMP on Windows - here's how to add RAW support. (GIMP is great and FREE for people who want to do a lot of processing and don't want Photoshop which isn't cheap !!!).

I don't like converting to png / jpg .

RAW (.CR2) files are like your original negatives and can be re-processed over and over again as they are lossless. If you need to edit jpg's etc a number of times then you are already editing a lossy format and will lose more and more data from the picture.

With RAW you can mess around with layers - alter white balance etc and do so many more things to really enhance a good photo.

Canon CR2 files are not viewable.

Yes no problem with reading the card and seeing the photo file icons in file explorer. Simply cannot view the photos. Had the same problem with a Canon 77D last year and exchanged the camera for a different model. The files can be opened with Photoshop
but to see them for review and deletion of the blurry ones before opening them in Photoshop cannot be done. It's the model of camera, this Canon 6D and some kind of 'new' version of CR2. My other Canon's CR2 files have no problem. They are not corrupted, it's
just a camera that has been out since last year and Microsoft/Canon haven't gotten together on it.
