    Physical Drives keep loosing their Drive Letter Mapping


    Hello,


    We are using Windows 10 x64 Pro on a system that has two M.2 drives. When Windows starts up the drives are properly mapped to a drive letter. After some time the drives just disappear from the list of available drives and Windows needs to be restarted to have them show up again with a drive letter.


    How can this be fixed?

    help. USB drive isn't assigned a drive letter.

    Any usb flash drive I plug into my computer isn't assigned a drive letter. The physical drive shows in the "safely remove hardware" but it doesnt show up in disk management. I have tried to populate the volume thru the safely remove hardware properties window and it does pop up in the list but it doesn't stay there. This isn't a format or assign a letter problem. It's more complicated then that. Maybe one of the services needed for usb drive management was disabled? Suggestions needed. btw external usb harddrives work fine.

    Windows 10 - Bug - Drive Letter Assignment

    I've recently noticed a strange behavior.

    Scenario:

    • I have three physical drives (C/D/E)
    • I have four mapped network drives (F/J/S/V)

    • When inserting a USB thumb-drive into my system, my system assigns the (already used) drive letter (F) to it.
    • Looking at "This PC" in my File Explorer, drive (F) appears to be the mapped network drive, and there is no visual evidence of the USB thumb-drive's existence.
    • Navigate into drive (F), and you go into the root folder of the USB thumb-drive.
    • There appears to be no way to access the original mapped network drive (F) location until the USB thumb-drive is removed.

    I would expect the system to assign it the next lowest available alpha letter, which in this case would be (G).

    Can you reproduce this behavior?

    Thoughts?

    Windows 10: Changing Drive Letters

    It's a lot easier than these other posts suggest in Windows 10. Right click on Start, select computer management. Under Storage, select Disk Management. Select the drive you want to map to a letter, right click, and select Change Drive Letter and Paths.
    This will work for both physical and logical drives (i.e., partitioned physical drives). This function goes back at least five versions of Windows, and a version of the method goes all the way back to DOS 5, though it had to be typed with a specific syntax
    back then. I guess I'm dating myself as an old codger.
