Windows 10: physical power button stopped wprking

The physical power button on my Acer Aspire-5 laptop, Windows 10, has stopped working. None of the easy fixes re: messing with the power settings has worked. I have now found that when I go to "Change Advance Power Settings", there is no "Power buttons and lid" option showing.


Any suggestions appreciated. TIA

Is there any way to completely disable the physical power button on a laptop (running Windows 10)?

It depends on the laptop. On many / most laptops you could open them up and physically remove the button or wedge it so that it can't be pressed (I've done this with an old Dell laptop.

This typically can't be done in software - and, of-course, unless you take steps to prevent it there is nothing stopping someone pulling out the power and battery.

 

How to disable "5 seconds power button shut off" on a laptop?

I does not suggest you to do this, if you insist on this, try the following steps.

1. Open Control Panel
   
2. Find and click System and Security
   
3. Find and click Power Options
   
4. On the left hand, you will see Choose what the power button does and click it
   
5. Click Change settings that are currently unavailable to be able to change the settings
   
6. In When I press the power button, you can choose Do nothing

Physical power button doesn't work

About two months ago, the physical power button on my Lenovo X1 Tablet (3rd gen) stopped working. It won't put the machine to sleep nor will it wake it up from sleep. I've applied all updates from Lenovo and from Microsoft. I double checked the desired behavior
in power settings and it's set to have ALL buttons (I only have one, but hey) to put the machine to sleep.

I've created a filter for anything related to power in the event viewer but no matter what I do, I can't find any errors from drivers or similar.

The button works though. If the machine is off (as in completely powered down) it will power on the tablet. I've also booted into Knoppix (a Linux live DVD) and within linux, the button works just fine, a short press triggers a shutdown dialog.

So obviously it's not a hardware issue, it's a software issue. It's as if windows doesn't know to listen to the button, since it won't even use it as a wakeup source.
