Windows 10: pictures won't open anymore. file format not supported

Discus and support pictures won't open anymore. file format not supported in Windows 10 Software and Apps to solve the problem; All of our photos are on an external hard drive.     All of our photos are on an external hard drive. Until recently there was no problem opening the pictures on the computer. Suddenly I received an error message saying the file format is not supported. I called the external hard drive company and because they do not open when copied and placed on the computer, either he says it is not a problem with the external hard drive. They do not open on other computers, either. PDF documents open just fine. I do not have these pictures anywhere else and I would like to fix the format so they can open. He recommended I contact you.

    can't open older pictures says we don't support jpg file format

    I have pictures JPEG image (.JPG) that will not open and view error:

    "Windows Photo Viewer can't open this picture because either Photo Viewer doesn't support this file format, or you don't have the latest updates to Photo Viewer".
