Windows 10: Pin to Start Workaround by PaulC_1 Not working for Desktop

After a long time searching, I finally found a "Pin to Start" thread that explains a work around allowing you to technically pin any file to the start menu.

The method was posted/shared back in 2015, yet when I tried it on my laptop, it worked great. I was able create shortcuts of the desired files, and pin them to the start menu. However, I just completed a Desktop PC Build and am trying to match all the settings and preferences, but nothing happens when I try the method on my Desktop PC. I run the *.reg file, just like I did on the laptop, and then created shortcuts, but there's no "Pin to Start" option in the right-click menu. Is anyone familiar with this process and why it might not be working?


My Laptop has Windows 10 Pro Ver 1909 OS Build 18363.778. So, it's up to date.

My Desktop PC has Windows 10 Pro Ver 1909 OS Build 18363.815. It too is up to date.

Pinning .msc Items to "Start".

I just typed gpedit.msc into the search box and when it showed in the results
rightclick/ pin to start

How to pin app shortcut to desk top?

I suggest you to follow below steps to change pin the apps on the desktop screen and check if it helps.

Step 1: I suggest you to perform the below steps to add the apps on desktop.

• Click on the “Start button” and locate the App that you want to pin to Desktop.
• Right click on the “App” and click on “More options”.
• Then click on “Open File location” and right click on the app, click on “Send to” option.
• Then select “Desktop (Create shortcut)”.
• Go to “Desktop” and check whether the app is located or not.

Or Step 2: To add shortcuts to the desktop

• Press and hold or right-click the desktop, tap or click New, and then tap or click Shortcut.
• Enter the location of the item or tap or click Browse to find the item in File Explorer.

Pinning .msc Items to "Start".

Actually, step 2 is unnecessary (unless you really want to add it to your All app list too) . You can create a shortcut on the desktop, right-click on it and pin it to Start from there. When done you can delete the desktop shortcut without affecting the pinned tile on Start.
