Windows 10: Pinned file not opening Windows 11

Hi Community,I just moved from Windows 10 to Windows 11. One of key feature in MS for efficient work is the possibility to "pin to list" in most office applications Excel/ Word etc... thus you can open the most freq used files quickly from a simple right click.I am using this on daily basis, and since I have moved to W11, those pinned file won't open [ hover on Excel logo in task bar, right click, open pinned file] . I tried to remove all pinned files, and pin them again to the list, but nothing to do, it won't open. The same issue also occurs for recent files that won't open.The temporary wor

File Explorer not opening via pinned Taskbar icon on Windows 10

Thank you for posting on Microsoft Community. I understand the inconvenience you faced. I apologies for delay in reply. I will certainly help you with this.

I suggest you to unpin the File explorer from the task bar and re-pin the File Explorer and check If issue is resolved. If issue persist, I suggest you to follow the below given steps and check if it helps:



I suggest you to run System file checker. System File checker (SFC) scan is done to check if there are any corrupted system files that could be causing this issue. Kindly follow the below given steps:

• Press Windows key + X, select
  Command prompt (Admin) to bring up elevated Command prompt.
• In Command prompt type sfc/scannow and press enter.
• Restart the computer.

If no corrupted system files were found in the previous state, then I suggest you to try the following steps:

• Open command prompt by pressing Windows key + X and selecting “Command prompt admin”.
• In command prompt, type the following commands and press Enter after each command:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

• Close the command prompt and restart the PC and check if it works.

Windows 10 Tweaks

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

• Open a new Explorer window.
• Click View in the ribbon.
• Click Options.
• Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
• Click OK

Pinning Word File to Taskbar

Works fine for me. I tested it in Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Example: Test.docx

• Rename Test.docx to Test.docx.exe
• Right-click on Test.docx.exe and select "Pin to taskbar"
• Right-click on pinned icon on taskbar
• Right-click on pinned "Test.docx.exe" file name in list
• Select Properties
• Change target from TEST.docx.exe to TEST.docx
• Important do not click OK yet
• Rename original file TEST.docx.exe to TEST.docx
• Now click OK in properties dialog
• Double-clicking on pinned icon opens TEST.docx

BTW, this even works with a Notepad .txt file
